I think thats just the point.
They dont want to have this car to compete with 911/f-type/amg-gt etc.
That market is very crowded with brands that have a much richer history in making upmarket sportscars or even supercars.
And the m6 also already sits somewhat in that market.
And you dont want to have both your models competing for the same potential customer unless you're already a firm marketleader in that segment (like porsche is doing/did with the more expensive caymans and base 911; every cayman test was basically comparing it to a 911 and not another car in that segment)
They clearly want to have this car competing against boxter/slk etc
The final z4 also wont be this radically looking so dont get your hopes up
