No Z4 Coupe

No fixed roof Z4M...lame. BMW could tap into the Cayman market offering a 6-cylinder vs Porsche’s 4-banger. I think they could steal some Porsche buyers on sound alone.

Not likely when those same buyers would almost certainly know that any Z4M would be half-Japanese. Porschephiles are sensitive to that kind of thing.

Not anymore sensitive than they are about the Cayman having a 4-banger and sounding like a WRX.

Amusing that the new GTS is supposed to be as fast on the N'Ring as the old GT4.

Doesn't matter how fast it is if it doesn't make you feel the same.

Don't disagree, but some of the complaint of the 4 has been that it doesn't have the performance of the six, which is clearly BS.

True true. My take on the reviews was that the 718 was more dynamically capable and faster in the real world but had lost some of the magic of the experience.

I'm just glad 981 Caymans are not in my price range.

Yes, more sensitive. I have a 718, and I used to own an '09 WRX. The 718 sounds little like the Subie -- in fact, it sounds far more like an air-cooled flat-6 than a Subie.

I'm not going to get into this now; not the forum for it. Suffice it to say that the vast majority of purists who are against the flat-4 have never driven one (and don't realize how superior of a motor it is) and don't understand Porsche's own history of designing and producing engines.

Subies have the distinctive "boxer grumble" due to unequal length headers. The Porsche 4-banger has equal length headers. It would sound like an old Beetle were it not for the turbo.

I agree, show the car.

Side note...anyone else disappointed with the leaked 8 series pics? Feel this will be more of the same...

The Supra is reported to be unveiled at Geneva. So maybe the same will happen with the Z4?

Although that would be really cool, I can't imagine that the two car makers would compete with each other like that - everybody would compare the two cars. And in a way, steal the spotlight from the other.

Which other car show between now and August could they use to introduce the Z4 to the public?

The 718 should have been called the 914 imho.
Thats its true predecessor, a smaller more affordable consumer model placed under the 911. Historically that would even have given a good oppertunity to name a 718 if some special version would ever get a 6cyl: the 914-6. That would complete the historical reference
I never understood why porsche didnt go this way. The 914 was very succesful, over 100.000 made (which was a lot in that time)

Two big reasons, IMHO:
- The 914 is associated far too closely with VW -- and it was branded as such in many countries in Europe. It would have diluted the Porsche brand and served as a partial de facto reinforcement of the flat-6-vs.-flat-4 debate.
- Reinforcing the Porsche brand through racing pedigree -- as the original 718 has in spades, and as previous generations of the Cayman have established in various series -- make far more business sense. Though the 914 was raced, it was primarily as the 914-6 because the original intent was to sell the 914-6 as a Porsche and the 914 as a VW ... which circles back to Reason #1.

BMW Z4: new pictures of 2019 model show Z4 Concept influence

Quote:
BMW is continuing to rack up the miles during development of its next-generation Z4 in order to ready the car for its 2019 launch date - and these new pictures show the car in greater detail than before.

The future Z4 model, which is expected to go on sale in March 2019, can be seen wearing production-spec bodywork covered by light camouflage. It sits on smaller diameter wheels than earlier spotted cars, suggesting it's a lower specification model.

The latest sightings follow an earlier video (see below), where the car looks composed when cornering at pace and can be seen wearing winglets on its nose - suggesting BMW was assessing the car's performance when under load.

Powering the new Z4 will be a choice of BMW's latest turbocharged petrol engines. The Z4 sDrive30i will get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces about 248bhp, while more powerful variants will likely get a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder, shared with the M240i, producing about 335bhp.

Both engines will come with standard rear-wheel drive and a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Z4 shares parts with the upcoming Toyota Supra, and is similarly expected to be offered with a hybrid drivetrain. Such a drivetrain would likely come with four-wheel drive.

BMW's decision to equip the Z4 with the same rear axle as the M3 and M4 rear suggests its hardware will be compatible with the 425bhp twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight six-engine of those models, or the 365bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder powerplant from the M2, along with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

This car would be badged as an M model and therefore get its own bespoke bodywork and a more focused chassis set-up.

BMW has been testing development versions of its next Z4 for almost a year. It announced the future car's arrival back in 2015 and revealed a concept version to preview its design last year. The soft-top, two-door model is expected to be revealed later this year before sales kick-off in 2019.

The car's relation to the Toyota Supra comes as part of Toyota and BMW's decision to co-develop a new sports car platform.

While the BMW will be a convertible, the Toyota will be a spiritual successor to the Supra and as such will wear a hard top, as shown by spotted development cars.

Inspiration for the Toyota's design has been taken from the striking FT-1 concept, first seen at the Detroit motor show in 2014.
