A thought on Unicorn status

Read some articles yesterday that Ford is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Mustang with a special appearance package for the 2025 Mustang. In a nod to the original year, the package will be limited to 1,965 cars.

Their limited production is more than Z4 US sales for 2022 (1565) or 2023 (1881).

Unicorn status does not exist on the south east coast, see a Z4 every week down here….1 or 2 more on sale at Myrtle Beach BMW right now. Wish it were a little more rare here but then again compared to Corvettes/911’s/Ftypes/Mclarens the Z4 is one of the rarer sports cars that I see.

The true unicorn of Z4’s will be the manuals.

Considering Ford churned out over 59k Mustangs in 2023, 1965 is a limited run. Ford dealerships are probably celebrating $40k markups now.

Yep, there will be fewer G29 manuals than total Z8s, probably fewer than Z4Ms, etc.

I think I’ve seen one other on the road here in Pa in almost 3 years. Must have something do do with the winters

I have never seen another G29. Not even at local BMW car meets. It is kind of an odd feeling.

Low volume cars will tend to be more prevalent is certain areas due to weather, demographics, and dealer support.

There are 7 BMW dealers in a 50 mile radius of where I live. Watching the websites, they've all sold a fair number of Z4s. But I don't see many on the road--lots of BMWs, just not Z4s. But Corvettes are a dime a dozen around here. I see 911s and McLarens about once a week or so. Also see some Ferraris, Bentleys, and the occasional A-M or RR.

OTOH, when I was still working, I saw lots of exotics due to the fact the dealer was just around the block from my office. They sold RR, Bentley, McLaren, Aston-Martin, and Cadillac. The Alfa and Maserati dealer was across the street.

There are 3 BMW dealers here within about 70 miles. The one 70 miles away is where I bought my Z4. I have seen some nice models on the showroom floors of all 3 dealers, but they seem to disappear once they are sold... never to be seen again. 90% of road traffic is SUVs and 4 door pickup trucks.

Also PA resident - I had my Z4 for almost three years and never saw another one while I was driving it. I even drove it down to North Carolina once and didn't see one. There's a black M40i around me that I saw twice since, but never while I was in my Z4.

I live on Long Island, there's probably one BMW dealership every 5 miles in Nassau County, I see maybe 1 Z4 a month from April to October and none the winter months except mine. A drive out to the Hamptons and Montauk in the summer I will see a plethora of Corvettes, Porsches, Ferraris, BMWs Mercedes, Bentleys etc. but will maybe see a Z4 or Z3 every other trip and almost never if I take a drive to the north fork vineyards.
