Ok, so likely introduction at the 2019 North American Autoshow and can be ordered starting January 2019, first deliveries in February/March 2019. Wow, that's a long time until then. I was hoping we could start ordering in Fall for November deliveries. Well, I am in Chicagoland, not that I desperately want to get a roadster just in time for garaging it

It could debut earlier than that. The "Supra" is rumored for Geneva in March.

Yup, but isn't that the look that most BMW enthusiast are wanting? I recall a lot of people calling the FT-1 design cues crazy, cartoonish, too many scoops, and etc.

By its very own definition, BMW enthusiast means "it's NEVER good enough." It's too flashy, or it's too stale. Weighs too much, or rides too bouncy. Not enough power. It's never enough power. Brakes too small. Brakes too grabby. Car's too expensive. Car's not expensive enough and attracts too many "wannabes". OMG why AWD. OMG why doesn't it have AWD.

You name it. A BMW enthusiast will find a way to complain about it. The only consensus seems that alcantara and CF is cool, and moar is better.

p.s.: I do find it interesting that with Toyota's involvement, this chassis has the LONGEST dev cycle I've ever seen in a recent BMW. By the time the first G29 Z4 is delivered to a customer it would have been close to 4 years since the camouflaged prototype was first spotted in the wild.

Assuming it will be in show rooms in early 2019, wouldn't it be closer to 3 years? Which still is a pretty long wait. I'm guessing Toyota wanted to get all of the bugs out first.

The kidneys are too slim..makes the car look funny. I thought they would be more aggressive and imposing like on the concept. We all know where this is going.

Next-Gen BMW Z4 is Nearly Unveiled in Latest Set of Spy Shots

Quote:
The next-generation BMW Z4 has been spied tied testing undergoing tests near the automaker’s headquarters in Munich.

The new Z4, which will debut in the first half of 2018, has been developed alongside the new Toyota Supra sports car. The Z4 will be a soft top, unlike the hardtop Supra, but the vehicles are expected to share both a 2.0-liter turbo four and 3.0-liter inline-six engine options developed by BMW. The German brand has also dedicated some of its lightweight materials know-how to the project, while Toyota has lent electric tech to a hybrid version that’s said to make up to 204 hp.

BMW previewed the styling direction for the new Z4 at Pebble Beach last summer with the Z4 Roadster Concept. It will wear its new widened kidney grilles up front, which will be flanked by squinty-looking headlamps and triangular front intake vents. The prototype pictured here has minimal camouflage on the rear, showing off its narrow LED taillights and a ducktail spoiler.

We’re expecting to see the BMW Z4 debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March, so stay tuned for more info.

2019 BMW Z4 Starts Dropping Camouflage As Debut Edges Closer

Quote:
This is our best look yet on the 2018 BMW Z4 as test cars appear to have dropped a significant amount of camouflage.

As you can see, the test car now features the production kidney grille up front, along with what looks like the finished bumpers, with the body just covered by a thin layer of the classic swirly wrap.

The overall design looks closely related to the Z4 Concept but it’s understandably toned down for production. We just wished that BMW would keep the concept’s shark-nose treatment up front but apparently we’re not going to get it.

The new BMW Z4 is riding on a new platform that according to reports was engineered for use with electrified powertrains as well as all-drive systems. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last two years, you’d know by now that BMW and Toyota co-developed the platform as it’s going to also form the basis for the hotly-anticipated new Supra.

So far we’ve heard that BMW will offer the 2019 Z4 just in the classic rear-drive configuration, leaving Toyota alone to play with electrification and all-wheel drive applications. We also heard that the Bavarians are planning a proper M version this time as part of the BMW M’s new expansion plan that includes launching 26 new models by 2021.

Entry-level versions of the 2019 BMW Z4 will be powered by a turbocharged 2,0-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a six-speed manual transmission, making 194hp and 236lb-ft of torque (320Nm). A more powerful version of the same engine will appear on the sDrive 30i models. BMW will also equip the new Z4 with a six-cylinder B58 engine in the M40i version. We don’t know what engine is going to be used in the M version but last time BMW built a Z4M they’ve used the same powertrain with the M3.

Production of the 2019 BMW Z4 is expected to begin in November 2018, with the launch expected in early 2019.
