Thought I’d take a moment to share the progress I’ve made on the system I’m installing in my Z. Still a ways to go, but happy with the work so far and thought someone else might find it interesting 😁 Using all Critical Mass components, and I’ve run new wiring to all locations.

I built custom mounts from 3/4” MDF by using the original speakers as a template. These hold the 8” woofers in their respective boxes. The original housing also holds both tweeters using mounting plates I crafted from Lexan. All OEM mounting holes are utilized on the rear wall. I’m still able to attach the grills, but I like the exposed look so thinking of ways to create a trim for the surrounding carpet.

For the doors, I expanded the cutout to accommodate 5 1/4” drivers. Goal is to create a better surrounding plate, but have to revisit this when I have more time. For the door tweeters, Lexan was again used to create custom mounting plates. The exposed tweeter and brass fastener create an interesting look, I’m a fan but the original screens are easily reinstalled. Probably will also create a custom emblem to replace the HK one 🙃

I haven’t got to the front center stage yet (still using that for phone calls) but have a set of 3” 2-ways which could do the trick. For audio quality reasons I’m bypassing the head unit and running a DAC from my phone wired to the amps, still retaining Bluetooth connectivity for track control and display with iDrive (volume must be controlled through phone). I’m going to purchase a harness to pull audio from the HK amp, but need to see how the SQ holds up. It would also save me from relocating a single stock speaker for phone calls.

Working on a box design and mounting solutions for the amps in trunk; but for now running a compact 12” and it’s sounding awesome.

Anyways, being an audio nerd, I hope somebody else finds this a worthy post. LMK what you guys think! I’ll post updates if anyone is interested

Awesome work! I would definitely love updates, I'm sure others would as well.

I've also always been into car audio. Not sure what I'll end up doing with the Z4 (which is still "at port") but always interested in what others have done.

Not an audiophile but like to see creative work on cars. Like the neat clean install. Best of luck with the system.

Cool... while you're in there make sure nothing can rattle around like it does stock on them heavy bass notes.
