At 67 and retired, I am buying this car for keeps and a long period of enthusiastic ownership. This is a dream car I will be thrilled to drive for a very long time.
Congratulations! I am your age and can relate. I purchased a new 2020 M40i in July 2019. We have enjoyed driving it and you will too. I remember tracking the production and shipping all the way to the dealer in Denver. How fun it was to finally take delivery. We have not had a single problem with it either. I don't mind having the automatic transmission. It seems to fit the car well. That being said, I just found out about the new manual transmission and part of me thinks that would be even more fun to drive. I just read a review in Motor Trend and the author said the manual transmission in the BMW is implemented better than it is in the Toyota Supra. He said BMW should have had the two options from the beginning. Regardless of the transmission, it is a beautiful roadster, fun to drive and we have been really happy with it.

Is this a new article, or something written a while back? We got a small amount of info maybe 2 months ago, and nothing since. Would love to see something new.

Sorry, but this was a free article I came across and hadn't noticed the date. It was dated Dec 11, 2023 so probably something you and others have already read. I noticed others are already taking delivery of their manual transmission vehicles which should give folks some additional unbiased (?} feedback. Should be fun to hear.

I'm not sure I'd call that unbiased.

I am two weeks shy of 75 and my San Remo Z4 is waiting on transport to the port. From my perspective, I did not consider whether it was a depreciable asset, just wanted it to have fun. For me, it is getting too late to worry about that.

Prices has ticked up from what I’ve seen with a quick scan of cars.com, thanks to spring. Cheapest M40i is in Florida a 2020 with 27k miles for 45k. No other M40i’s in the 40’s, most early years are in the low 50’s with good mileage.
Sellers market lol.

I do wonder what the “bottom” of the market will be in the years to come. I’m optimistic good condition M40i’s may not drop out of the 30’s. With this being it for the Z4.

I am 75 and purchased my 2022 M40i in Sept., 2021. I get goosebumps everytime I start the engine and this car is definitely keeping me young! Trust me, you will have a blast driving it for many years to come!

FWIW Just ran this at Edmunds against my VIN.

Edmunds Appraisal Report. See how your offer compares to your estimated trade-in value amount of:
$74,000 BMW MSRP 2020
$45,450 Edmunds True Market Value® 5/3/24

In Feb 2020 paid $62,900 on a 36 month lease after discounts and allowances. Had a MF of 0.000375. Bought the car as the lease ran out. 5% loan on the RV through a local bank.

In comparison got killed on the price of the 2022 M4C in July 2021 MSRP less $1500 BMWCCA. Did OK on the loan 0.9% Through BMWFC

I just paid $61K for a late production 2023 M40i with 2000 miles and a perfect Carfax. Plus, the car is loaded with every conceivable option. That's quite a price drop, (in 10 months), from the original sticker of nearly $75K.

First 3 years are killer depreciation with year 1 being a total blowout.

I overpaid for my 2020 M40i back in November of '22. Fully optioned car with only 1400 miles on it. I think I was at $64600 out the door.

You’re renting the car and you’re not stuck with the end equation

But the residuals (which is the biggest factor in how much the monthly payments cost) are based on expected depreciation, and while BMW inflates that for some models, the Z4 has never gotten such treatment.

It’s still better to lease this particular car because the car has a super heavy depreciation because it’s sort of a niche car. It’s not even close to the resale value of an M car. And if you don’t lease it, then you won’t own the car, the car will actually own you.

Lease rates aren’t good on anything right now, but neither are the buy rates.

So are you basically telling people to buy 3 year old CPO’s instead of leasing or buying new?

There's nothing magical about a lease. It's essentially a purchase with inflated fees (and usually rates) but with a guaranteed buyback amount at the end of the term (and penalties for damage or excess mileage). They made sense back in the day when BMW subsidized them, but not in this market.

Current 36mo terms on the Z4 are 55% residual and ~5% interest. Interest rate is decent/around market, at least. According to KBB trade, a '21 with 30k miles is holding about 62% of its value.

So, again, that just means that the lease pricing will reflect the depreciation.

Lease payments are roughly calculated as:

Code:
((SALES_PRICE - RESIDUAL_VALUE) / TERM_MONTHS) * MONEY_FACTOR
So for all intents and purposes what you pay for in a lease is the depreciation.
