I don't get why BMW decided to rename it Z4.
The car looks a lot more expensive than the previous models, it's seems like it could compete with the f-type, amg-gt, base 911,... but instead BMW decides to put in some 4 cylinders, to make no m-model and to rename it z4. It's like a missed opportunity. The looks are there, just put in some 6-in-lines and a V8 for the m version, make a coupe and they would have a hit. Now they're just coming back to a market that almost doesn't excist anymore. |

They dont want to have this car to compete with 911/f-type/amg-gt etc. That market is very crowded with brands that have a much richer history in making upmarket sportscars or even supercars. And the m6 also already sits somewhat in that market. And you dont want to have both your models competing for the same potential customer unless you're already a firm marketleader in that segment (like porsche is doing/did with the more expensive caymans and base 911; every cayman test was basically comparing it to a 911 and not another car in that segment) They clearly want to have this car competing against boxter/slk etc The final z4 also wont be this radically looking so dont get your hopes up

Base 911 bare bones is 90k and a weak 0-60 of 4.4s, for that you'll get a highest end Z4 with every conceivable option and ill be faster. Base Ftype is slow as hell, its 80k + to get a sub 5 second 0-60 Amg starts at $112k I don't know why the hell you are bringing up this beast in comparison to a half its price Z4. Probably less then half actually. An I6 Z4 will smoke the Ftype and Base 911, and ill cost less to do so. Maybe compare it to a huracan |

How about comparing to a Corvette? 0 to 60 is important but not everything. |

Go for it. Of course its not, but the Ftype is a brutally bad example to use when talking down a car. Or one who's base msrp is or will be more then double (id bet my left nut). |

Partly because I want to keep my credibility intact but also as a little bit of proof, transaxle installations have definitely been put into consideration. It's grainy but that really looks like a Torque Tube and transaxle pre-provision to me.
Now that spy shots of the Toyota prototypes in Japan have been published, I can say with certainty that they are not the cars that were at our facility because there's no way +2 jump seats will fit back there. So what they were and what Tada-San meant with his choice of words during our meeting won't be clear until Frankfurt. |

I just wish the headlights were as sharp as the concept. The production version looks like a frog.

What is 'our facility' in this context?
Time will tell if you're right and the cars will be getting a transaxle or not. My guess is still not and a conventional setup. Having two manufacturers team up to reduce cost and then producing 2 cars with completely differently designed drivelines is not very likely in my view. Technically possible sure, just very expensive. But the automotive industry is filled with economical fuckups so who knows I cant get any detail from your pic though. Could be anything. Even the cars orientation isnt clear. Could be a torque tube with diff, could be a torque tube with transaxle (although very very small imho), could be a chassis crevise for the propshaft with diff etc etc

This latest mule shows how far they are from the concept already with the headlights and rear end design.

^interesting how one artists' impression rendering on a concept car looks dorky and the other one with just some details and small lines different looks quite OK
But the second one is too low and has wheels too big to make it as a production car. Windscreen is also too small; only a midget will fit.
