Until the E90, nearly all BMW's had mechanical LSD's. But back then M's still had individual throttle bodies, some had dry sumps and you could certainly still tell an M from a regular car.

Yea, the 1990s before they offered DSC, an LSD was throw in with their then M-Tec package..
Now, I think they can't get away with the current brake-based ediff now that their 40i line is pushing 385hp, so now a mechanical LSD is required to harness that much power to the ground..

Our N54 135i would have been about 32.4x more enjoyable if it hadn't been a one wheel vaporizing tire destroyer. Why any rwd car doesn't have an LSD is beyond me. Even my GTI has one.

I know how you feel; I had one too..
The rear diff was welded on instead of bolted, making an LSD installation impossible.. You know how that story went...
