In our case, there's just the two of us and we're retired. My wife loves the X5 as it's big enough but not too big. I'm happy with the Z4 as it's a convertible and it has enough room to handle day-to-day transportation and shopping.
Just noticed the family size of your neighbor. Not really familiar with the GC's have never looked at them. But a family of 5 is one two many for a 4 series Convertible or Coupe. Pretty sure most of them are 4 passenger cars.

My car has no headrest or seatbelts in the middle rear section of the seat.

The M8 the other line with a convertible is a split with the coupe rated at 5 the convert at 4. That said 5 seats is considered very optimistic in the M8 Coupe. Reality its a 4 seater.

Additionally the M8 convertible has less rear head & leg room than my car. Rear seat is much like the rear seat 911, good for the puppies.
