As for using phone for TXT's. If you don't want to use CarPlay. Under comm, select the phone then unselect Connect via CarPlay (or something like that).

If I select to use iDrive or just plain disable CarPlay even on the phone, the car just lets me know that the currently connected mobile device doesn't support messaging.
Exact same iPhone works in our other cars just fine.
