Someone else mentioned going after the Boxter . . . They may envision this to be like the non-S Boxter, and the chassis architecture might technically be capable of it, but from the cars I've driven recently, BMW's mainstream development group doesn't have the tuning capability and focus that Porsche clearly does (or even Audi for that matter).

If BMW miraculously decides to make an M version of this car (unlikely IMO), I could see potential for it to come close to Boxter S level performance.
I'm sure BMW does have the tuning capability it is the bean counters who interfere. They purposely want a more GT experience for this car.
