Or did they mention that smell only because they are actively looking for something. Once you get it in your mind that something must be going on, you start looking for excuses or the smallest things.
What if Ferrari gave all their team Jolly Rancher's candies, and so every time someone is near a stationary car, they all of a sudden also smell a sweet something nearby?
Don't forget that when the Ferrari's first started being quick, the addition of the cape was the explanation there.
