Sorry, but it is absolutely NOT an M car. Use all the reasoning you want, and yes the performance is great. But, it isn't an M car.
Finally. Was missing the "Enthusiast" complaint...
Curious, do you consider the M550i to be an M car?
I care less about the nomenclature. However, "pure bred" M cars (M2-4) are best suited for tracking and less useful as DD given the harsh ride etc etc - YMMV. M performance cars have performance oriented upgrades that increase the fun factor and make them trackable (to a certain degree) without too many compromises. Hence, I own a M235 2-series (and not a M2) and the Z4 M40. The latter may or may not exist in the future as a "pure bred" M version.
