Yeah, a few of these cars either are sold or were sold in the U.S. at one time: the Merkur XR4ti, most TVRs, Mazda2, Smart. What we didn't get were the souped-up versions ...
... and as for Renault: When your main U.S.-market car was called the LeCar, which was marketed as a happy-sunny oil-glut microcar and had roughly the reliability level of a Yugo/Zastava -- at the same time that you were producing the incredible 2G and 3G Alpines and racing all over Europe and F1 -- ummm ... yeah, Renault isn't gonna chance that again. It damn near put the company under back in those days.
