  • The next 8 cylinder M motor is going to be called S68. Most likely, it will be an evolution of S63, not something radically new. I would expect some electrification with the internal combustion side mostly staying the same.
This engine will probably debut in the upcoming XM which does not yet have a release date. Also expect to see it in the next generation M5, M8 GC, X5 M, and X6 M.

BMW needs something to remain competitive against Mercedes' upcoming 63e and 73e models which will use a M177 V8 hybrid setup, so hopefully the S68 is used in a similar way with at least 100hp coming from the electric motor(s).

Whether any of the M50i models (or the 750i) will continue with a V8 in some form for the next generation of vehicles is still not known. It is worth noting that Mercedes brand new W223 S Class includes an S580 model with a ~500hp M176 V8 with 48V mild hybrid system.
