I hadn't experienced this with my Xs. I am wondering if the case I used reduced the charging enough for it not to get so hot as to trigger a thermal shutdown. It did get pretty warm.
I now have a 11 Pro and haven't tried it on a longer trip yet.

Just regular Apple leather case. Should have zero impact.
