I've been having a similar discussion on one of the UK forums. The 3.0 or even the 2.0 are arguably more fun per £/$ than the M40i, but for out and out looks, sound, performance and spec, it's well worth the extra money.
And OP, is it fast? Yes. On a brief run out to Belgium before lockdown, I really noticed how quick it is from 80-130 kmh. You get stuck behind a lorry, a Dutch (usually) Audi sticks itself to your rear bumper, then as the lorry pulls over, you leave the Audi for dust.
Very satisfying!
