The engine hasn't changed. What has changed is that BMW is looking to get better gas mileage and emissions from the engines. 0w20 allows the car to get up to temp faster and it is better for short trips which is what a lot of drivers are doing.

As for how good 0w20 protects the engine long term, that's up for debate.

I'm planning to use 0w30 LL-01 which is still approved for all years N20/N26.
