I'm sure your concerns are real, but....well I can't think of a nicer way to say it: back off. Catch him when he falls and advise when it fits, but other than that let him get on with it.

He gets the same treatment I got at this point in life: he's still in college and without children, so he can live under my roof.
When I got the news, I walked into his room, slapped him on the shoulder, and said "IF you need someone to talk about this, you know where I am"
I'm simply airing my OWN pain at the loss of a relationship.
