Mercedes was working on AN engine, not THAT engine (2014 iteration). They probably had dozens of single-cylinder concepts running for every possible contingency. This is Mercedes we are talking about. The article I posted even stated that they guessed the parameters wrong, built a 4 cylinder engine, and a few other challenges before they built the 3 working mules for the 2014 spec engine.

Mercedes didn't cheat. They were simply better and more dedicated in their execution of the regulations. As they have been each and every year since then.
