You have to realize that the US has 330 million people and is geographically massive. Americans are extremely well traveled even if 40% don't have a passport. There are Americans traveling every inch of the world at any given time. In Europe a passport is a necessity because the countries are so small. You can jump on a train and be in France in an hour. For Americans, it's a 10 hour flight to anywhere interesting, and $1500 in airfare. That's a huge barrier for many people.

Yes, I have visited - East coast, West coast even a little in between plus the 50th state too.
I have also had the pleasure of meeting military personnel stationed here. They certainly make the most of exploring Europe during their stay.
