The manual transmission FJ would get about 15mpg in the city and 18 on the highway....if I was lucky. Premium gas too. She was a very thirsty truck.
The auto tranny ones actually got better mileage because you have the option of disengaging the 4WD. That said, I think the permanently engaged 4WD system offered only in the manual version is superior because it has a center differential rather than a positive lock transfer case layout of the auto. The only time you can use the 4WD in the auto transmission is if you are off-road.
