Actually, I think they were an ingenious design that works incredibly well. The ratcheting tab that allows one to securely hold cups / drink bottles of varying size is impressive; and the holder folds away neatly into the dash. But I agree that the material was not nearly robust enough, resulting in these breaking far too easily, probably as one of the car's occupants struck the opened holder with their leg while getting in or out of the car.
