I had it happen to me about 10 miles from home. If I hadn't read about the noise, I wouldn't have had a clue. I limped home and called my local BMW dealer and talked with the head of the service department. He told me he was sure it was a rock and to come to the dealership to check it out.
In the meantime I repeatedly went around my block, starting and stopping pretty hard. I alternated forward and reverse. After 1 1/2 times around, it came out.
The next day the service told me no damage.
Try forward and reverse and have patience...it'll come out.
