History?!? AE's were fairly recent editions to the BMW aesthetic (..
early 2000's). While the kink has been present in some form on most BMW's, the Z3 Roadster/M Coupe didn't have it. Were those cars not BMW's to you? Many cars have the kink. I don't see it as being something that significant.
