Two ways that have been proven to improve mood:
- physical exercise
- service to others (volunteer work at hospital, school, church, nursing home, etc)

Those two things are more effective than any chemical manipulation.

And neither of them has negative side effects.

Your situation isn't so different from what everyone goes through from time to time. Taking action will have positive results.
