I have a stupid question. At least I'm fairly certain it is stupid.

Silencers are not legal up here, so I've only had the opportunity to shoot a suppressed 1911 in the States, and that was only once. So I'm not that familiar with them.

But as I understand it, the basic principles of a silencer are a set of baffles / ports within the silencer tube which allows the gas to dissipate / expand into, which reduces the sound the gun makes. In a nutshell.

Idle curiousity here - if you were to wrap / encase a muzzle brake in steel / etc - would it then basically serve the same function as a suppressor?

In practice, yes, who would do this, but just idle curiosity on my part. I'm not planning on doing any such thing to my own.
