Did you ever get an answer for this? I think there is some sensor which detects your hand is close by and shows menu items. The map display on my new X3 M40i has shrunk into menu mode (while the map is displayed) a few times by itself and there is nothing nearby to trigger that. My Z4 has not had this trouble at all.
Do you have anything hanging from the center mirror like furry dice?
