There’s been a very exhaustive thread on the M2 reviews that dropped over on the main page and G87 forum. One of the key issues (besides the obvious ones) is James from TH demonstrates the laggy response in the manual from 2nd gear at 18 mph. I was curious about this because I had the s58 and don’t remember it being laggy even if I started from a start in 2nd (with the ZF8). So I grabbed the GoPro and did a similar test in sport plus and comfort modes in the b58. I compared these to James’ and it seems like the b58 is more responsive. Could be the gear ratio delta between 2nd gear in the ZF8 vs manual, but I started at 11 mph and 1300 v James at 18 mph and 1900 rpm.
So the boost threshold is higher in the s58. I suppose this might be expected because the s58 is designed for high end performance and b58 for low and mid range power and efficiency. Thoughts? I absolutely love this b58 and prefer it to the s58 in daily driving. Obviously at the track the s58 would be preferred. https://youtu.be/VDJK0X_lgTE https://youtu.be/2fmtALenOiU |

I think it’s the way M tunes the s58 It’s made to be revved out and/or have a more NA feel. The b58 is more of a street motor and is tuned to give you all the torque down low which is helpful for daily driving.
Just my opinion though |

I owned the ZF8 M3 recently and then the Z now. I would describe the S58 as much stronger turbo feel than the B58 (which has a higher compression ratio and feels more NA higher in the rpm range). But I agree about the lower max torque on the B58 for daily driving at lower speeds.

The B58 in my X3 has almost none of that feeling, and it actually seems a bit wheezy as it revs up, but it is good for casually jetting around town.

Think within the S engined cars there is a big difference between the RWD & AWD versions. The 503BPH? version overcomes the lag with power & AWD programing. Shows up in the 0-60 timed runs AWD vs RWD. From a roll in top gear the B does better up to about 50mph then from a 50mph on up the S really piles it on You have to take the whole drive train into consideration. Would not buy an S powered car without AWD. Bottom line is you can really see the B is a street oriented package & the S has a track focus.
