I think it is a BMW thing as the Magna Steyr plant in Austria is very sophisticated and can supply cars in any colour required by the original manufacturer. They only need to change the pre-filled paint cartridges on the paint spray machines to do that.

Magna Steyr build the 5 Series (G30) in Austria and that model has BMW Individual colours as an option. The Z4 (G29) has frozen grey as an option and that is a special colour so I don't understand why they don't offer Individual colours. It may just be that the numbers don't permit more choice of colours. I am waiting on an M40i and I only had the choice of four colours plus the frozen grey. Perhaps if there is a demand for Individual colours then BMW may offer them on the Z4 in the future, at a very high cost though.

Doing one off custom colors might sound like a simple process, but most assembly lines are not capable of handling the complexity it adds to the process. |

Eating a fair bit of crow here. Earlier in this thread, I deadpanned that the black did nothing for me. But after seeing this video below, the M40i in Black Sapphire is stunning, and I would give serious thought to ordering one just like in the video - Black Sapphire with Ivory interior.

Followup to my post above. What is BMW's Sapphire Black like? Is it like Porsche's Basalt Black Metallic, that has gold flecks? Or Porsche's Jet Black Metallic, that can appear blueish, almost purple at times?

Bluish... that would be BMW's Carbon Black. Sorry, don't know about the other black.

I agree the color choices are awful across the G line. All dark metallics. You'll just have to accept that Individual is the only way to get a good color, but Atleast you're options are only limited by the ability of the paint to match on plastic and the steel panels. |

I so agree that the BMW Individual program is truly the only way to get a real defining color. |

Got these family group pictures from another forum. Not sure if the E89 is in red or orange? It sure looks orange next to the red G20. I used to have a red E89 and it was an 'orange red'.
Anyway, thought you would appreciate the pictures! Even the frozen grey seems to be everything but a boring color IMHO. |

I have yet to see a Misano Blue in "real life". The SF Red is a great color especially when blacked all around. A pity that the M40 comes with "Ceranium Grey" mirrors and grill.
Frozen Grey looks awesome but the price tag and maintenance requirements are just too much to deal with.

I've just placed my order for an M40i here in the UK. I desperately wanted the Frozen Grey but BMW have a 2 month delay on the Frozen paint so I've instead opted for Misano Blue.
The online configuator looks like this: I test drove a blue one last week and I think it looks very different in person. There's something almost plastic about the way the blue looks in the light? I can't quite put my finger on it. What do you all think? Bonus Frozen Grey in the garage for comparison: |

Agree with you on the blue, it looks a bit like plastics to me, but I do like blue and it definitively screams ‘fun car’. Isn’t the other blue also available in the UK?

Agree on the blue. I have one more to share in sunlight. It is a bright light blue.
