Possible Z4 buyer here, how does Dinan 30i compare to M40i
Building a Z4 gets me this:
Z430i with M Sport, Trim and All Options: $58,000 Z4M40i loaded $68,150 Dinan add-ons for cheaper Z: DINANTRONICS SPORT PERFORMANCE TUNER 249 DINAN COLD AIR INTAKE 549 DINAN FREE FLOW AXLE-BACK EXHAUST 999 so with these additions totaling $1800 how close in performance?

Did you add Track Package for ~$2500? If you want to make the lighter 4-cyl a performance beast relative to the M40i, I think you really need to add that option in for the differential.
But yeah, you can put it right in the ballpark of the M40i performance and save some money but will still be missing the sound of the 6 cyl. |

no experience with Dinan and they have no info for the G29 on their site but I'd be very surprised if they could get anywhere close to the stock M40i's performance with an exhaust, air intake and tuner on the 4cyl....my best guess would be that you might get half way there from the stock 30i

you may be close to the performance but the whole experience is listening to the sound of the b58 with the top down!

#confused.. on Dinan's site they don't list anything other than pedals as compatible with the g29. If fact they list needing G29's to do development on. Even if same engine, doesn't BMW tune them differently across the line, so the 30% might be on an X3, but would it be for a z4? Or am I not understanding. sorry if dumb question.

I did include 2500 m package
Dinan is only tuner to match factory warranty and dealer would install Same engine from 230i and X3 so I had to fudge on that issue Also, for street Torque not HP is more important. With the 45ft lb you get 340ft lb versus 369ft lb, plus the Z430i is 200 pounds lighter. Stock on a short track the cars weere only 2 seconds apart (1.03 and 1.05)

IMO, the choice here is between a car that likely has a fairly maxed out engine already, due to mods, versus one that is already a lot more powerful and has more headroom for future mods.

HP still matters. Actual dyno of the M40i shows torque at 381....at the rear wheels https://g29.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1657836 Running all the numbers through a drag calculator with a 200lb weight difference shows the stock 30i at 13.7@104.5, a tuned 30i at 13.05@105.8 and the stock M40i at 12.21@117mph.....a quick google search verifies that these numbers are pretty accurate; Car and Driver has the M40i at 12.3@116mph and the 30i at 13.8@102mph. I'm sure there's a tight track somewhere where the weight advantage of a modded 30i would put it on equal or better ground than a stock M40i but if you think it will be as quick on the street or most any performance comparison, I think you'll find you're mistaken. You asked the question, that's my answer based on what info is available.

Back when I was running just a JB4 & FMIC in my 335is an identical car was running the full boat level III Dinan package. We are both listed on the same Drag Times page back to back listing 204 & 205. JB4 12.583 @ 114.529 About $700 Dinan 12.590 @ 108.740 About $2500/3000 One of the really dumb pieces of engineering on the 335is was to install the Dinan cool air package you have to remove the secondary water radiator from the car. Most recognize that BMW's are built with a cool air intake so dropping a functional radiator to install a noise maker intake really made no sense to me. FWIW would buy the most powerful base in the line up to build on. Never regretted one single cent I spent over the years & especially don't regret getting a M40i vs a 30i Z4.

All good arguments, but what about real world driving. If I do quarter mile races on the street I go to jail. $10,000 is not chump change.
Not direct comparison, but pretty convincing that the extra 10k is worth it:

You will use less throttle out of a normal traffic light start, passing will be quicker, all round driveability will be better as the car is just more responsive.
An inline 6 is naturally smoother running than an inline 4 with the added benefit to some it sounds a whole lot better. If you have to mod it to be happy the 6 will always get more power with equal modifications. FWIW Not been buying BMW's that long first was a 2004 330 ZHP convertible. One of the things I noticed is the majority of the debadged cars were the base power versions.

That video pretty much sums it up; 2 seconds in the 1/4 mile is a massive difference that some software and a couple of bolt ons aren't going to erase. ...and while most owners won't ever drag race their Z4's, that kind of acceleration and power difference is very noticeable in every day driving.
