Surely you jest. Low costs in CA? Read item 12 on the form. And I'm guessing that's a pro-rated fee. Playing with the CA DMV calculator, the annual fee should be about $800. IIRC, it does drop a bit every year.

That's for general merchandise. Vehicle purchases in Cook County are taxed at 7.25% plus 1.25% if you have a Chicago address for a total of 8.5%. Also, currently your trade-in value is not taxed.
I live in St. Louis metro east (Illinois, Madison County) and have a tax rate of 6.5% for vehicle purchases. https://mytax.illinois.gov/_/ . Last edited by StanDiego; 08-18-2023 at 12:04 AM.. |

6.6% AV here in GA, and I’ve been told it jumped to 7.0% recently. We used to have a “birthday tax” annually until 2013 when it was repealed, so annual tag renewals dropped… for example on my M3 from $1.3k annually to $20 unless special tag (+$25) or EV (+$250).
Thankfully when we trade in we don’t pay the AV twice. |

Texas is badass... our vehicle purchase sales tax is about 6.5% and registration is $80. BUUUUT since I'm a disabled veteran, I also get one of my vehicles registration for free, I just pay for the documentation processing fee which is $10 and inspection flat $7.
I don't miss California or Virginia... with the former being STUPIDLY high each year. I was so happy to ditch my California residency. |

While it is only 4.15% in Virginia, Personal Property tax the first few years can be a killer, as it is based on JDPowers loan value as of Jan, and rate is county dependent. More rural counties are less expensive than city and built up counties. My county is 3.4%, with the state wide 42% discount off the first $20k value of the vehicle, so I’m looking at about $1100 (or roughly an added 2%) the first year.

On Jan.1, 2019 they raised the sales tax in Broward County where my dealer is located from 6% - 7% to match the rate in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties and I was upset and thought 7% was really high. After seeing what your 10.25% tax rate I almost feel lucky paying only 7%.

I like the city, but I'm kinda tired of the cold as well. Working on my wife to move somewhere warmer, so we'll see. |

https://www.flada.org/partial-exempt...ate-customers/ In my case I reside and purchased the car in Broward County so it is 7% either way. |

I think the sales tax is based upon the state in which it is registered. Same concept that Amazon uses with sales tax - based on where it is delivered, not where it originated.

To be specific, it is based upon the owner's current address regardless of where in the state the owner registers the vehicle. As an example, I bought my Z4 in Missouri but the dealership used a service to register the vehicle in Illinois. The service registered it at an adjacent Illinois county but the sales tax was based upon my current residence.

I placed an order for week 35 z4 M40i - only got $2600 discount here in Charlotte. Our tax is 3%!! Property tax is based on the car value. They were not giving loyalty as they said Z4 won’t qualify and they will do it if BMWFS offers it at the time delivery.. is that correct? No loyalty now??

Not sure how it works at every dealer, but when I placed my order I was able to lock in the current BMWFS rates. If they improved in between the time of the order and when it arrived, I could take the better rates. In my case they did not, so I was able to keep the rates they had in January when my car came in May. |

uhh, maybe, lol. My 27 (or 27k, by today) neighbors who left Cali for TX have mentioned a similar reason, or two, for having left the state. But seriously, I have been impressed the the polite sharing of info and how varied our collective tax systems are and have evolved over the years since I have lived in a few states mentioned.
