Interesting review.
One thing I’d say is if you take the M40i and mod the suspension like I did, to me it’s worth the $75k price tag. The only other convertible option in the BMW lineup is the M4 comp X drive which is a huge sacrifice for driving dynamics and costs upward of $100k. (EDIT: and the 440i!, of course) https://youtu.be/nBEQDug_Lh8?si=-M3WnDeTF8OmTZJo Last edited by Bimmerfun82; 09-15-2023 at 10:45 AM.. |

Awful. Turned it off, way too much self grandiose mocking and chatter not nearly enough car.

I may be missing your point but the M440i convertible starts at $69,550 and the M440i xDrive convertible at $71,550, not that I'd ever consider them instead of a Z4.

The 30i is priced high relatively; but the M40 is a bargain .
They love the way it drives, which is what matters |

The only real negative issues I heard were price and BMW treating it like a step child.
I really actually like both of those things as it keeps it much more exclusive. I chose the M40 because I wanted something with more power than I would probably ever need. So while I might lose to a C8 on a race track or drag strip, I fortunately don't live on a race track or a drag strip. Besides, a comparable C8 HTC would be $90ish, and then you still drive a Corvette.

The truth is that the car is indeed expensive compared to the rest of the BMW lineup. MSRP for a comparably specced M2 is similar, and plenty of the M40i models are cheaper especially the M240i which would be similar in size, and even for larger cars (M340i, X3M40i). It's also somewhat expensive compared to sports cars it competes with, including the Supra, Z, etc.
You have to look at it specifically as a convertible for it to make sense since the Boxster is now substantially more expensive when comparably equipped, as is the F-Type. It definitely wouldn't hurt the car to be around $8K cheaper across the board. |

Which is why resale is poor. If you’re price sensitive you can get a very lightly pre-owned and save the $8k.

I think it's a great value especially since it's most frequently compared to the Porsche 718 that can cost 10-20k more.
HAD to fix that little boo - boo... mean to say 718, not 918. Last edited by Horseman; 09-15-2023 at 02:32 PM.. |

I suspect many people feel the same way about the 30i which is a bit ironic to me because an absolutely identically equipped (same brakes, suspension, differential, wheels, everything) fully loaded 30i is $9K less than the M40i, the only difference being the engine, and the 30i engine is essentially the same as the M40i with two cylinders removed.

Yeah weak sauce from these guys. Usually the reviews are much more thorough and accurate. They say Bmw forgot this car, but not true. It sells like bananas overseas. But they did a more thorough review in the past. I like what they said about the advantages of the 30i. But I like the tail happy 40i.

Agreed, strange video from them. I feel like I've seen all of theirs, I like them a lot, and so it's easy to look past a lot of the silliness when you kind of expect it. But they did a pretty short review kind of like they had to do it, and they didn't care because no one else would care either.
Glad to hear they love how it drives. If a manual version finally shows up I'll probably own one, and liking how it drives is the thing I actually care about. |

I was looking for a convertible. Choices came down to Z4, 718 and C8. I was looking to buy in late 2021. At that time, the Z4 M40i was the best option for me. The C8 was almost unobtainable with long waits and significant dealer markup. A comparable 718 was at least $20k more and will likely be more expensive for maintenance in the long run. The Z4 M40i was everything I wanted and was the best value. I have not regretted that decision one bit. I get compliments on the car everywhere I go.

Their review was fair. BMW didn't market this car. And for those of us who got it this has been a boon (rareity, future value). My M40i was in for a service last week. My service partner drove it out for my collection and I suspect she had never been in one before. "Wow, that's a nice car !" :-)
