That's not to say the G29 6MT transmission is bad in any way. It's quite good.
Can't comment on the G29's MT have not even seen a live car yet.

Will comment that both my Porsches MT's were better than any of my BMW MT's. Found the BMW's to be notchy if you did not have your hand positioned properly.

My old Muncie's Chevy, StingRay, GTO & Current TKO-600 were the same. You needed to change your grip on each shift & let the transmission do the work of sliding through the gates.

The other solution for drag racing was to do a Slick Shift Mod which came in two flavors. It involved grinding off every other synchronizer tooth turning a 36 tooth synchro into an 18 tooth synchro and doing the same with every second engagement lug.

The other version is no syncro & only 5 engagement lugs. This kills street driving & was a track only thing.

These endless comparisons to sports cars… round and round.

BMW is more luxurious, more muted. It’s the same feel it’s always been- at least since the e46 without ZHP.

It’s what I want in my M3. I don’t want a corvette or Porsche feel in my BMW. And if someone does want that feel, modifications can be made to get closer to that.

It could be worse. And for me it’s just right.

My comments were just personal opinions about the 6MT implementation not the suitability of the car. Think the Z4 M40i is an excellent GT & thats the way I use it. Fast interstate runs with 3 hour comfort & excellent fuel milage. The 8ZF fits that model very well.

Think you are missing my point or I did not specify it closely enough. Short History. My BMW 6MT experience goes back to a 2004 330Ci Convertible ZHP. My last one was a 2013 135is Convertible.

I sold a Boxster S 6MT to get the Z4. Had a 911 Carrera 4S 6MT before that. Was strictly referring to the transmission & nothing else.

IMHO, maybe not so humble, Porsche does a manual transmission better than BMW does. They also do the PDK better than the BMW 7DCT, had one in a 2011 335IS.

BMW does the whole GT thing better than Porsche. Porsche is building sports car oriented products.

Dude agree with your comparisons but bottomline Porsche cars are not worth the price they command, its more of a status symbol " I own a GT Porsche" they are great cars but overpriced.

Understood and wasn’t trying to attack you. I have just read this a million times between the G8x forums and now the G29. It’s more of a vent on my part and an expression of my appreciation for the BMW manual.

Agree would not go near one today especially with the "market adjustment" dealer rip offs.

No problem, never saw the post as an attack. Some things do go round & round - oil change timing and brands - 87 vs 93 gas - MT vs AT - tuned vs stock - generation 1 vs generation 2 - badged vs debadged - ///M vs M-Power.

Just a standard part of the internet car forms where a lot of different ideas can be discussed. Everyone pays their money & does their thing.

Thats your opinion

I would content that Porsches ARE worth the money based on the waiting list and the amount of money that people are willing to pay for them. Also Porsches have WAY lower depreciation rates vs BMWs. That tells you what you need to know.

The price of a product is dependent on what people are willing to pay for the experience. I also drive an Macan S and there's no comparison between an X3M40i and a Macan S. IMO the Porsche is worth the $15K premium and thats why I bought it. BMW makes a nice car but its really not in the class of any Porsche.

That brings back some memories! I had a Max Wedge 64 Dodge Coronet with slick shift. NOT a fun car to drive in traffic. Plus it got 6 MPG!

My previous BMW was a 335iX with the manual transmission, which I enjoyed. But, it let me know I was done with that phase of my life.

Each of us approaches this in a different way. Bought a Z4 to replace my 135i because a manual was available. Turned 75 today and a manual still piques my interest.

Yeah but it only cost $2.50 to fill the tank.

I haven't grown up yet so am still doing things I should not do. About the only thing I have not done is sky-dive. Two of my son in laws invited me to go with them but I hard passed.

Ah ok to each his own , why didnt you pay premium and wait for years and buy a Porsche then

I have driven couple of 718 manuals , boxsters and Caymans and those car are not worth 120k + new or used , they are great cars btw

You should drive a 911. The Porsches are so much better in a track/race setting it's not even funny. It really does depend on what you're looking for. I'd imagine most of us with Z4s (or with Z4s on order) wanted a softer/GT type roadster vs. a harder edged track car.

Yeah thats my dream to own a 911 but cant afford it and lack of manual is another factor, i also think mid engine is better than a rear engine car

You're 100% right there, there's a lot of engineering that goes into the rear-engined 911 to try to overcome the physics haha

I can’t help the affordability but they make a manual 911.

Yep, currently with just the T, S, GTS, GT3 and some special editions I believe. Rumor has it that the 992.2 being released in 2 weeks will be reducing some manual availability there.

Having owned a few, the current Porsche lineup is definitely overpriced for what you get. Especially if you want special paint or anything out of the ordinary. They are nice cars but good lord the maintenance is laughably expensive.

Of course my opinion is probably tainted because when I want to go fast I hope on my BMW liter bike and embarrass damn near everything else on the road.

I’m excited for my manual Z4 (currently on the worlds slowest auto transport shop, Wild Rose Leader) because it’s exactly what I want, something I can drive everyday that’s still pretty quick and sounds excellent.
