How are you enjoying the M8? Is it super heavy or does it hide the weight and feel agile? Does it have rear wheel steer? Gran coupe or cabrio or coupe?

While I don't own one, I have driven an M8 Comp a few times. Nimble is not a word I would use to describe it, but damn is it fast. It's much more a luxe GT cruiser than it is a sports car. At this point in my life, I don't see a fit for me in the 8 series range, but to be clear, it sure it a nice machine.

Given that the MSRP on an M8 Coupe or convertible is nearly twice that amount, you must be from one of Marvel's alternative universes or saying that the Z4 is like an M8. I have a good friend with an 8 Gran Coupe - not sure if it is an 840 or 850 but he loves it. He does say driving it is completely different than Z4 Duncan |

Last year when I did the M Track days at Indy, once of the cars I drove in the drag race portion was an M8 Competition convertible. Its unbelievably quick, but you notice the size difference versus the Z4.

These cars are expensive (older people generally have more disposable income).
Roadsters/convertibles are not 'attractive' the younger generation. A lot of older people grew up with 2-seaters as a viable option to get from A to B. This is likely to be a second (or third, etc.) vehicle in any given household (iow. more money required - see first point). I would also hazard (without judgement) the older people have these cars paid off outright, while the younger generations are hefty leases or loans. [There are exceptions, but they are a small minority].

I was in my 20s in the 70s and convertibles were very popular in the New York area. Also everybody wanted a muscle car if possible and we loved to drag race.

I haven't driven the M8, but I drove an M850i convertible on the Street Drive last December. That was quick enough. I agree that it feels much bigger than the Z4. But the sound of the V8 is just wonderful. The down side is the price.

Downside is the depreciation can be more than the price of the Z4m40!

I see plenty of younger drivers in Mustang convertibles. A few months ago I had a conversation with a guy in his late 20's that was driving a white 6MT Supra and he told me that he would have purchased an M40i as he really wanted a convertible if BMW had only offered a 6MT. His license plate says it all. |

"Roadsters/convertibles are not 'attractive' the younger generation."
My so who is 29 likes the thought of a vert but would never buy one (and live in South Florida). None of his friends have one either.... and no one in my office of about 50 employees (mostly under 40) have one either. So I would say anecdotally this statement is true.

This was a nice trip down memory lane. The first three cost me about $700 in total with two being saved from the junk yard. The TT was one of the most fun cars to drive, but the Z4 is definitely the best all around daily driver (now that I can get away with a 2 seater).

For a minute I debated an M440i convertible over the Z4 because it seemed a little more practical with the backseat and xDrive. But I'm 6'5", so when I put the seat where I needed it no one could sit behind me anyway. Kinda made it a moot point and the Z4 an easy decision.

That does seem to be pretty typical for 4-seat convertibles - the rear seats are too cramped for anyone other than small children.
Though for people who want to travel with small or medium sized dog, or maybe portage large store boxes or packages that don't quite fit into the trunk, the rear seat could be useful - very easy to access with the top down. Or this was the thought I had when I was considering a ZL1 convertible. The final nail in the coffin for that idea was the EPA rated 14/20 MPG mileage and smog ratings killed that for me. The Z4 scores remarkably well in comparison to, well, everything, considering it's performance envelope. Had to give up a manual transmission which I still miss from time to time, but I'm generally still ok with that. And a little OT, but: Smog ratings: https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?...44509&id=45026 Quote:

I did think long and hard about an M4cv as well. And while I didn't pull the trigger on one, I probably will in the next couple of cars. With that much power, the extra weight is a little less noticeable, especially in the straight line.
