This will buff out right?

So mad. Changed lanes out from behind a car and hit a massive retread. Lucky it didn’t come up over the car.

I don’t think I want to put this through insurance. Anyone have experience replacing the front bumper? Thankfully, if I had a new bumper I think I could do it myself.

No experience on the Z fortunately, but you might want to rethink the insurance thing. That will be an expensive bumper/repair. You pay for coverage, if you are not at fault you should use it unless there is something unusual about your situation.

$1400 is cheap. Paid almost twice that when I fked my front bumper on a parking lot under the same assumption

It's not apples to apples, but we just got a quote to replace the bumper on my wife's X5 from the dealer and the part alone was $2500 plus another $1500 for paint.

I would definitely go through insurance unless it's somewhere close to your deductible... this shouldn't increase your rates...

First of all, that stinks. I had a similar thing happen with my 1 month old Audi TT years ago when a piece of sheet metal flew out of a truck in front of me on the highway.
It looks like as a minimum you need to replace the bumper, ultrasonic sensor, the small grill and the other plastic component and that doesn’t include paint. I had a guy back into my back bumper on my Z4 and ended up with two dimples. The estimate was over $2k, so I would imagine you are north of that. This also included sensor calibration. I don’t know what your deductible is, but I’m guessing you are in the ballpark for just parts and paint.

Appreciate the responses. I carry high deductibles (1500 for collision) and parts will be $2200. This is for the parts, paint, etc. I did some more research and I can do the install in a few hours. So, I would spend $700 extra if I don’t go through insyrance but I can control the speed of repair and don’t need to worry about this showing as an accident in Carfax.

Btw, the parts replacement is a quote from IND.

I have some thinking to do.

They have to remove the grill, sensors, etc, remove the entire bumper, repair the damage, repaint the entire bumper, then put everything back together again.

I had a similar damage happening to mine. They had to replace the bumper and the damaged black plastic trims. Total repair cost comes to about USD1,400. (I'm in Thailand).

Oh man I'm so sorry to see this. I just had a ding on my rocker panel after my tire wash stool got away from me and that cost $400. Wish you the best of luck with this. My heart goes out to ya!

I think that requires a new bumper if you want it repaired so you can't see it anymore.
Since the trim is damaged too i'm thinking it will be 2000+

I had a small scratch on mine, they couldn't repair it properly and i had to go back 4 times to get it resprayed, and it was still very visible in the end they put on a new bumper after all.

Insurance ended up paying 1900$ for it. (in the end I paid more in lost revenue due to vacation days to go back and forth to the dealership than for the repair)

Next time if it's something small i probably wouldn't go trough insurance either and go directly for a proper replacement of the part

Curious how this turned out? The part swap does look DIY-able. I guess I'd mostly be concerned about the paint and if it matched. If the replacement bumper was painted for this job or came off a similar car that was totalled for damage elsewhere.

Also curious OP's car ownership history M2 under your name, M2C in the picture, Z4 is the subject here. I'd love to know what you thought of how they drove (engaging, steering feedback, etc.) but can do that over IM if you don't mind spending a few minutes!

This very similar damage cost 8,000 to repair which included 3,200 for the headlight assembly. It cost me $1,000 deductible because someone was careless in the parking lot at work and the building security cameras are apparently useless.

Actually, the photo is an OG M2. Loved that thing! I replaced it last month with a new M40i, but still have the 30i Z4. The M2 also had a stage 2 tune. In a nutshell:
  • M2 is a drivers car, faster than anything I ever owned, and reinforced the relationship between driver and road. The driver is one with the car and road. Amazing car, but just not practical.
  • The new B58 M40i combines luxury and convenice, but takes away as much of that driver/car relationship with the luxury yoh gain. It’s a great car and tons of fun, but hard to compare because the two are so different.
  • The Z4 is powerful and fast for being a 4 cylinder, but again, not the M2. The Z4 does a good job of connecting the driver to the road, but the steering is numb compared to the M2.

TLDR: each car performs in the category I bought it for (speed, comfort, and pleasure in that order between M2, M40i, and Z4). However, I needed to sacrifice speed for the time to life (new dad) and needing more space.

Hope that helps! IM me with questions.

Just bought the new bumper cover and trim piece tonight for $2300 shipped to me from IND. My deductible was $1500, so I’m feeling good about the decision so far.

Quick update. Began disassembly tonight. Got the bumper removed and about half of the parts transferred to the new bumper in about 1.5 hours. The reflectors will need replaced, btw (they are not removable).

I expect to finish tomorrow after another couple of hours.

Definitely an excellent job!

Did you have a manual or any kind of reference material?

A lot of follow up questions of course: parts you purchased, was the bumper already painted, any tricky parts, aligning the bumper...
