The GOAT VR46 cheating death...insane

Ok racing fans, we all respect our brothers on two wheels. But what we saw today was just insane.

The GOAT, Valentino Rossi came within inches and milliseconds of certain death.

So grateful he is okay. Just check the video.

Nope, bike luckily tumbled right in the gap between him and Maverick. His reaction when he got back to the Pits was one of disbelief. Not always his biggest fan, but admiration for him getting back out there after the Red Flag and putting in a solid performance.

I had a flashback to the Marco Simoncelli tragedy in Malaysia and I suspect Vale did as well.

When MotoGP returned to Laguna Seca, I volunteered to be a corner worker to get closer to the action and somehow wound up with the plum assignment as communicator for Turn 8, the upper half of the Corkscrew. I was stationed in the little blue tower at the apex and called track conditions for race control on a secure landline system.

When Rossi made the insane dive bomb pass on Stoner in 2008, I had to calmly key my mic and say, "Control, Turn 8. 46 off and on." I was closer to them than any other person on Earth and had a better view than the boom mounted camera next to me. (Warning: Do not go drinking with the crew from Spain that operates that thing if you have to function the next day.)

My headset exploded with yells from the control room as the usually calm head of control screamed, "OH HELL YES OFF AND ON!"

i believe that corner is very dangerous for many years already.. it needs to be updated urgently like a bit more left than the sharp right.. this was the same scenario on different wheels setup like 20 years back.. it is really dangerous that actually dying like this wouldnt be a bravery.. assuming rear of an F1 car is one of the strongest part of the car..

Was a bad crash, I was watching it live.

I'm still not entirely sure how it happened though, it looked like a brake-check.

The Moto2 crash was nasty as well, full beans at probably close to 150mph into a stationary bike.

He was certainly aware of Morbidelli's bike (and Zarco's as well) flying across the track, but target fixation is the fastest way to get involved in a crash instead of avoiding it.

Found a photo of myself in the tower on the Corkscrew during the 2008 Rossi/Stoner battle. I'm in the box above the Mazda sign, at the far left.

i believe that was the best seat you can get at Laguna Seca even though you were standing..

i wanted to do few laps there back in October but they told me they only rent the track for full day and i need to pay like $8-10k or something i ve said ok..

idk but can be since its a recent common problem among racetracks around the world.. most of the tracks built somewhere isolated then people move in nearby then complain about the noise.. then dont move somewhere nearby a racetrack right...

racetrack can be replaced with [any kind of pre-existing not-so-quiet environment]

Get it all the time with airports in the UK.

Green land next to the airport that's been flying jets since 1960s sold to build housing estates in the 2010s. Residents complain that they bought a house next to an airport and its too noisy.

Everyone within 20 miles also complains about increasing air traffic despite the fact that 2020s new planes are virtually silent compared to the old JT3D turbojets of the Boeing 707s and the RB211s that powered all sorts through the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Next generation engines you probably won't even hear an aircraft taking off from more than 1 mile away.

I agree but well after it had gone past. Rossi or Vinales wouldn't have had time for any fixation watching the vids..in my opinion the bikes are far too fast 192 mph is just crazy. It is racing of course but come on these things should be limited to 150mph and Morbidelli has said someone needs to pay for what happened after he went into Zarco with human reactions simply not being able to cope with 2 wheels at that speed.

You said 20 years back and my jaw hit the floor. I remember that like it was yesterday, nearly 20 years ago!

Good grief we get old fast.
