How to get Media and Map buttons to go to CarPlay?

Hoping maybe someone can help. Sometimes when I press the Map button it goes to the BMW map, but other times it goes to Waze in Apple CarPlay. Sometimes when I press the Media button on the iDrive controller, it goes to BMW's media menu and sometimes it goes to Spotify in CarPlay.

Is there any way to set this? It seems to do it completely at random. How do I get the Map button to go to Waze in CarPlay and the Media button to go to Spotify in CarPlay?

I've literally had it before where I can press Media and Map buttons to toggle directly between Waze and Spotify, but I have no idea how or why it was doing it and not sure how to duplicate that.

If you are playing music on Spotify, it will get you to Spotify. If you have route navigation on (ie you use Waze or Google or Maps to guide you to your destination) the Map button will bet you to,that app.

At least that has been my experience.

I bound quick button 1 with carplay map and button 2 with carplay audio to solve this
