New car

I'm looking at buying a new car next year, and am preparing myself for it. After buying and loving my used 2007 328i E90, I want another bmw. I was looking at an M4 because I like the 2D sports car look, but $70k+ was a little much for my first new car purchase. The M240i was my next choice because I found one newer, but used, for $43k. One thing I'm looking for is the turbo I6 and fast/sporty. If anyone has any recommendations what I should look at that may fit in these criteria, I'd love to hear your opinions and I'm happy to be in the bimmer world.
Edit: Awd is a must, I live in a snow state and want to drive it year round until I find an old 4wd yota

If you want to buy a new BMW with two doors, a six cylinder engine, AWD, and comfortably under $70,000, then the M240i xdrive is your sweet spot.

You could step up to the M440i xdrive, but you’d have to spec it with few if any options, and negotiate hard.

You can buy a used F90 M5 in the $50k - $60k range right now. It will be a 2018 or 2019 without a warranty, but it is an option if you are willing to have miles on your car.
2020 M8 is also an option under $70k if that is your ceiling. Both of these have AWD and handle fantastic in the snow with the proper tires.

Plenty of options used if you ask me if new only provides one option.

If you're stuck on the sod cylinder vs the (better) V8, a used 840i would be a great option. And not do they depreciate, lol.

840i isn't a V8. It's a V6. The M850i and M8 are the V8's.

840 is still a great option too though with plenty of power and great looks.

I can only imagine the shock on the OP's face when he takes one of those in for repairs / maintenance.

The 840i is a B58 which is an Inline 6.

Here’s a very low-mileage used 2024 M240i xdrive, too low mileage to qualify for CPO, not local to you but not too far from you and easy to get to from you:

https://www.bmwofsouthalbany.com/use...c8ce57a0cb.htm

And a low-mileage 2022 CPO M440i xdrive, also not local to you but not far from you:

https://www.bmwoflatham.com/certifie...23abdbc6f3.htm

I especially like the fact that this one is equipped with laser headlights.

I have no interest in either of these. I just found them with a quick search, knowing that you’re in NY.

Of course, if you don’t limit yourself to two doors, you can find all sorts of M340i x-drive, M440i x-drive, etc. out there.

dethsrider, you should seriously consider a new M240i, it has the extremely reliable B58 engine and is fast and fun to drive.

You will want the xDrive model that is perfect for someone like you that lives in a snow state. Also it is a little faster than the less expensive RWD version and IMHO will give you better handling.

You didn't mention if you switch over to snow tires or not. If you don't, they offer four different wheels that come with with all season runflat tires.

Take an xDrive M240i for a test drive and report back to us.

PS, there is no truth to the rumor that if you order the Thundernight Metallic color the car will drive faster but it will definitely look cooler!

The link I supplied in my previous message is for, indeed, a Thundernight metallic. Ordinarily I buy sleepers, but I would go for that color in that car.

The price on that 2024 TN/ Black was $53,955 and it had 3358 miles.
I don't think that is a great price considering you can purchase a brand new 2025 for about $60k.

True, but one can always negotiate, plus it’s there vs. ordering one.

I actually did a build on it: $58,450 MSRP, based on the listed info in that link.

If the car has any features not listed, such as upgraded wheels or tires, that would make it a better deal.

I wasn’t clear if it actually has Harman-Kardon. It’s listed in the details and specifications, but not in the packages and options. If it’s missing, then that makes it less of a deal.

If you do a 50 mile search on the BMW USA site and enter the OP's zip code you can find several xDrive's that are already at nearby dealers. Some have more packages than others and of course the color combination has to be something he likes.

440i xDrive seems like the right answer if you're looking for something brand new.

The OP said he was looking for a 2D sports car look and wanted fast and sporty. The M240i xDrive checks all of those boxes!

Modern BMWs are generally great cars with a top-tier drivetrain, pretty decent quality, and one of the few truly sporty vehicles out there. With that said, echoed by others, take one for a test drive. You are coming from an E90, and in my opinion, the modern BMWs have engineered much of the soul out of the car. What makes them great cars (refinement, quietness, etc) makes them less of the "ultimate driving machine" than they used to be.

You're going to get that pretty much across the board with a modern car though; it is unavoidable at this point. Miata (MX-5) and Boxster/Cayman, and maybe GT86/BRZ are possibly the last few cars left that focused more on driving fun than being a comfortable all-arounder.
