They could standardize the battery pack and keep them at gas stations for rent.
It would probably weight around 200 lbs. and cost around $4K.

I suppose you *could* get an Anker SOLIX power station or any other similar product from the competition and expand it to support ~20kW of power to give you another 50 miles of range but why. It would be more convenient to stop and charge at a DCFC site along the way and you wouldn't have to cary that weight in the back of the car. Range anxiety is for those who haven't used an EV or those who drive in places with >100 miles between public chargers and haven't realized that in a pinch they could stop at a KOA for a few hours to use a Level2 charger at a campground. And before anyone gives me grief about waiting at a campground to charge at a Level2 charger, I'm only offering that up as an option. Obviously I would only Level2 charge at home or at a hotel or office unless I already planned on staying at the campground.

Ain't nobody want to carry around a useless dead-weight battery pack for the one time out of 100 they need another 50 miles.

Seems like you are still thinking in terms of gas cans... Unfortunately this type of solution is not practical with today's battery tech and will not be practical any time soon. Even if we ignore any cooling requirements this pack would likely require, the battery would be very heavy, and big. What would be much better than setting up these gas stations with the ability to rent these extra range packs (and all the logistics related to how to return them) is that they simply install a decently fast charger. In the time it would take you to empty your trunk, go inside and rent the battery, install it in your vehicle, repack up all your stuff, a 100kW charger will have given you more than the 50 miles of range that pack would get you (at least in an iX).
