Lucky you! I was recently told that I won't even get a production slot until maybe as late as February, if so, means delivery not until April or May. Sales rep said it's the end of the year thingie that's got everything screwed up.

I'm about to go to something else. This is ridiculous.

Waiting as well

I ordered on Oct 15. I now have a Jan. 3 build date and a late Feb. 21 projected delivery date. You should expect 4 months wait.

I think it's unfair to include time spent waiting for a dealer to get an allocation/production slot/quota because that wait can be avoided by choosing a dealer who already has one available.

The weeks at sea do seem to go slow.

Z4 Quota

But that is the BMW world we now live in. Just because a dealer wants to sell/build you a particular car does not mean they will be allocated a slot to do so..its certainly not like the old days...

And how do you know they have an allocation unless you're in cahoots with the fleet manager? I've shopped 3 big Texas dealerships and they're all in "the same boat" with no Z4 allocations, or at least that's what I'm told.

Happens to be the biggest dealership in the U.S. - San Antonio and I negociated a decent 6% discount. So if anyone is going to get an allocation it's them. This isn't an X5 which are a dime a dozen and built here. It's rare and a different animal.

Buying an "exclusive" car weeds out the masses. It is rare to see someone driving a new Z4. That is a good thing. It sets us apart from the more common folk. If you don't want to be special, buy something else. If something else is easy to buy, then it certainly is not special.

Not an X5 is an understatement. Even more rare because of COVID. No clue how distribution is determined and don't think dealers know what they're getting until received. Probably the uncertainty you seem to be sensing. Dealer sees production number & build week when they already have the allocation to sell. Current choices IMO: calling other stores ready to pay more if impatient for new, looking at CPOs if a few grand is a big deal or sitting back and enjoying the anticipation like I did during the months added to my wait by factory closure.

Are you tracking the ship’s voyage? Going to drive you crazy as well. My ship went to the Caribbean first if I remember correctly and remained there for a couple days. Not sure if they had shore leave and enjoyed the weather, partying and stocking up on rum or what....

HAHAH - Yeah, I now know what ship it's on and can track it from
https://www.marinetraffic.com/

The ship is in the north sea and next going to Belgium. My friends think I'm nuts tracking the ship...this is not good for my OCD!

Yeah, to be honest I'm not in a hurry because it's going into my garage for two months until all the snow and salt is gone in NH. That's usually mid April.

I ordered at the beginning of October and my car is now on its way from the port in South Carolina to the Performance Center. Taking delivery in a few weeks. It was not easy getting a production slot. I missed it entirely in September and even in October my dealer had to jump through hoops to get me one. This is my first time ever ordering a car. The wait has been tough but it will be here so soon now!

Definitely a beautiful car worth waiting on.. I test drove it- see photos -and was awestruck- have owned 2 M3s, a prior hardtop Z4, a Shelby Mustang and an Audi TT S- I’ve raced Panoz at Road Atlanta & Ferrari at Las Vegas Speedway- This car is very fast, comfortable, beautiful top- top ergonomics & electronics inside & comfortable which u never get with the above

Mine is on a ship in Belgium right now on its way! The sale manager asked if I would like to come in and "settle the paperwork" as it almost here..Hahahahah.

I told him, sure it knocks more off the price, otherwise I will come in and pay for it when I see it in person. God I hate dealers!

Smart. I ordered our X5 and didn't sign on anything until I did a walk around and a good test drive.

A Little Upgrade

Just realized that the car in the picture isn't the one you spec'd out in an earlier post. It looks like you upgraded just a little bit. Did you get a similar deal on this car? The car you talked about earlier was a sparsely optioned Sport Line s30i in Mediterranean Blue with an MSRP of $54,595 with a deep discount. I would guess the car pictured would be a few thousand more as it is an M Sport with the Dynamic Handling option. If you got it for the price you mentioned in your early post you got the deal of the century!
