Classic car show in Lake Constance Where: Southern Germany: Bodensee (loosely translates to: bottom lake) aka Lake Constance Messe (convention center) Friedrichshafen, Germany. When: This last weekend. http://www.klassikwelt-bodensee.de/ I had known about this classic car show for quite some time now. Years in fact! Every year something always came up and I had never gone. This year WOULD be different!  Last month I bought a old classic German car magazine and saw the advert. I made up my mind to go, right then and there! I am glad I did! Some background and the area. Friedrichshafen is way down South. In fact it is at the bottom of Germany’s border with Switzerland, Austria and France. It would be like a 430(+) kilometer drive each way for me. But I am always up for a drive and an adventure! Off I went. Some info on Friedrichshafen. Friedrichshafen is home to companies like: ZF Friedrichshafen AG, MTU (makers of alloy cylinder heads for Porsche), Dornier Flugzeugwerke, and Zeppelin NT. As soon as I pulled up onto the Messe grounds… I knew I made the right choice! The first thing that greeted me was B24 Liberator parked on my right on the access road. On my left was a temporary race track set up in the Messe grounds. There was a red Ferrari California being driven hard around the test track. And bets of all, anyone could watch as the driver hung its tail out around the turns and let it rip WOT thru the shirt straights. I was hooked! And I had not even parked my car yet!! What I found cool was that the Messe is built right next door to the local airport. And the exhibition halls were designed like huge aircraft hangers, with big doors on the side facing the airport. The Messe is fairly brand new and has a nice clean (German) cutting edge design. I really liked this show. The Messe consists of TWELVE count ‘em (12!!!) huge halls! Everything from classic cars, new cool cars, boats, planes and motor cycles and a few odd race cars thrown in. What is not to like? I certainly had no complaints. I really liked the eclectic mix of classic cars at this show. Not only were there many classic cars… but the average car enthusiast could drive you car there and park inside of the huge halls. So it was kind of an impromptu car show with in the complex of show cars. And being this IS Germany… a bier tent and Bayerische (folk) music band was also thrown in that mix! Like I said… What is not to like!?!? I was surprised not to see any cars from BMW AG. I guess they are counting their euro cents right now. I did see some really nice displays from Audi and MB. And there were a ton of car clubs from all over Germany. Out in the parking lot I saw many great cars. From Italy(I) and Switzerland(CH), Poland(PL) even Czech(CZ) too! During the show they also had an air show going on. They had some Red Bull aero show. And some classic WWII machines in the air. It seemed like where ever you went there was something for everyone! This show had a lot of crazy cars! It was a very strange mix of cars. But I loved every minute poking around the MANY display halls.
I forgot to mention some interesting things... That black Countach with 748 PS motor... it had a twin turbo kit installed. Price? A cool 1Million! I nearly laughed when the sales guy told me that! I also had a good chuckle with that Lambo pulling that trailer! lol Those shots of the old MB SL's from the 70's. Mechatromik is teh firms name. What I found cool is they take an old classic car... and make it all new! But not only retstored... but they use updated parts from moderm C-class MB models of today. They even put in working ABS and modern A/C systems. Even the radio looks old at the controls but has MP3/USB and CD controls! Quite cool German engineering. IF any of you are over here in Germany... you probably should pick up "Motor Klassik" to follow these shows. When ever I am at the German super market I try and atleast flips thru the pages so see what shows are up comming. This is how I started to learn German... by learning the car parts names in the German car magazines! lol :") - David - |
