Z4 Ultrasonic Curb Sensor
Although I mentioned this in another thread I thought I would start this one to track progress. I've already written and tested the basic ranging code and tested the circuit, so today I designed and printed a mount for the ultrasonic sensor and ran a quick test to see if at least fundamentally worked in terms of position and distance from the front. The mount friction fits between the front bumper's rear edge and the under-body snugly, and seems to hold well. This way if it hits something, worst case the mount will break and it will dangle free until I replace it with a new mount vs. causing any damage to the bumper edge. It sits about an inch higher than the rubber air dams located on each side. Here are some photos of the first pass guess at distances for each stop. At first I had < 30cm from the sensor (~12") to trigger the RED warning and < 100cm (~3'-3") for YELLOW and > 100cm for green. I've already updated the SW to 40 cm (16") for RED, < 60cm (~2') for YELLOW and > 2' for GREEN. Next steps are to figure out a good mounting place under the hood for the RYG display. I'm thinking a similar friction fit mount that slides over the rubber lip just under the hood on the left side in front of the driver. Lots more to figure out before it's ready for a real test run, but so far, so good.

I'm looking for ways to route wires from the cabin to under the hood for the curb sensor. I noticed that up against the firewall on the passenger side under the hood there is a removable cover and it provides access to a decent sized space. In that space there is a large rubber plug in the firewall that looks like it could be used as an access point that looks like it is right behind the glove box. It looks like there are at least four screws to remove the glove box but there is also an airbag right below it. Does anybody have any helpful information on taking any of this apart, or better yet, a simple way to run at least 1 wire into the cabin?
Thanks! |
