Just to chime in on this it is most likely not your dealer. The dealer I ordered through got my last car from another dealer no problem. But now the majority will not swap cars due to the shortage. It sucks but it what happened to me. Other dealer still had the car a month later as I was watching their site. Might still be there I stopped checking after mine finally entered production. Also severeal dealers won’t even sell to you if you live out of state.

I totally agree about the shortage of cars but it really comes down to who you are working with and what they want to offer another dealer for a trade. I picked up my car the beginning of September and there was already a severe shortage of new inventory.

When I decided on the Misano Blue/ ivory combination I did my own search before speaking to my dealer who I knew didn't have that color in stock because I didn't want to wait for one to be built in Austria. The BMW search engine limits you to a radius of 100 miles which I think is ridiculous so I did a Google search and made a list of BMW dealers in all of Florida and then found an M40i in my color combination at a dealer about 150 miles away from me. I called my dealer who I have a great relationship with and their sales manager immediately contacted the other dealer. They were willing to make a 2 for 1 swap for this Z4, most likely two 228i's which would be close to the equivalent dollar value for it. To make a long story short, the other dealer confirmed the swap on a Saturday and then reneged on it 2 days later because a customer walked into their showroom and they sold it themselves. I had already sold my Mercedes to Carmax when I was first told we had a deal so my dealer stepped up to the plate and found me a Z4 in PA and trucked it down at his expense. I was behind the wheel of my Z4 and drove out of the showroom in 1 week. That is what I call a great dealer really who works for you.

By the way, is there a BMW policy that they won't sell you a car if you live out of state?

yes I find a lot of these issues. This new world is insane.
Now a day I don't hesitate to leave bad (and good) reviews where I can.

Talked to a TN dealer in knocksville and they were plain and simply bait and switching like a used toyota sales man selling a 4K car.
Insane behavior.

Not so sure if its BMW policy or not. I live in NC & got two consecutive, 2014/2018 (custom ordered) cars from a dealer in OR based on price.

Was shopping for the 2020 Z4 & they told me they could not sell me the car as I was out of state.

They lost a slam dunk sale & knew it. First time I ran into this. Z4 (dealer lot car) & M4 (custom order) are local buys but the price was fair.

Very interesting, I need to ask my salesman in Ft. Lauderdale if such a policy exists.

Not policy. When I did my search, I picked different zip codes to do the 100 mile radius on the BMW site and found the exact car in Tallahassee, FL. The dealer would not trade but would sell the car outright. I chose build to order instead and probably got one of the last 2021's with no feature deletions.

Lucky you, I paid 86.000$ - 74.000€ for a fully optioned 30i in Spain( Mandatory European plus Spain taxes included). M40 been 7.000$ more wasn't an option since I drive most of the time sport plus and as fast as possible. With the 30i Its very easy to go too fast, with the M40 I would end having big problems with police.

YIKES, my M40 with everything but the auto cruise control was $70,000. That included the Frozen Grey Metallic paint.
