I am able to use my phone to start the car though. The place where the charger would normally be only has a rubber pad with no lettering on it.

My X5, which I picked up at the end of January, has the charging pad and the credit card key.
How can you start your phone with the car? Are you talking via the app? If so, that’s remote start, not the digital key.

That would be interesting - starting my phone with my car!

I know what you are saying and yes it is by using the app. I don't have the parts needed to place the phone on the charger or the NFC pad.

We have the digital key and card for our X5 without wireless charging. The NFC pad is there without the charger. The digital key installs on your phone. On my iPhone, it appears in my Wallet app and looks like the digital card. You call it up in the Wallet just like you would a credit card for Apple Pay and then set the phone on the pad.

I agree with both points.

To answer your question about torque, the M40i v 4-cyl (I've had both engines in the last year - 430i convertible prior) is night and day. The M40i has a mountain of torque, very powerful and enjoyable in any situation. It's more oversteer and tail-happy than a mid-engine 718, of course understeer really isn't a problem though. Tail-happy is very easy to control though, it's not unsettled but the tires spin if you put too much throttle down. I don't drive mine hard (it's not even broken in yet), but much more of a GT than a raw sports car like the 718. Very enjoyable and relaxing to drive, and plenty quick.

FG/black is sharp! Mine is FG/magma. The magma interior has a grey trim line around the seats, which is a nice tie-in with the FG exterior. Fun color. You may already know this, but one thing to keep in mind with the satin finish is paint care. I did full front and sides matte PPF and ceramic coating (can't tell a difference between the panels covered and those not covered with PPF). This way I can easily hand wash and don't have to worry about sap/bird droppings/rock chips/scratching or swirls on all the black plastic bits on front end and A pillar, etc. It was about $4k.

Ok, so sounds like you don’t have the digital key. You have remote start, which you can start the car from the My BMW app. The digital key lets you add a card to your Apple wallet (not sure if it works on Android). You can then unlock the car by walking up to it and bringing up the card in the wallet and holding near the door handle. Basically works like Apple or Google pay. You then start the car by placing your phone in the nfc pad and pushing the start button. In addition, you get the credit card key as well, which works the exact same way.

Remote start is an option (stand alone or premium package on the 2023). Digital key is standard now that the parts are available.

You don’t need the wireless charger for any of this. Just sounds like it got removed from your build due to the parts shortage awhile back.

Yes, thanks. This is how the digital key works. I think there was some confit between remote start and the digital key.

Yes, that is the way it works on my X5, but not my Z4, since my Z4 is missing the hardware due to the parts shortages during its build.

I'm very pleased with the wireless charging after installing the USB cooling fan from Kwajtrader.

Great feedback on the color and PPF, missed the PPF on my Porsche, and looked like a pitted swiss cheese after 5 years of ownership and weekends on the track and in the twisties on group rides.

I actually thought a satin finish would be easier to maintain, not having to deal with clearcoat, but haven't seen the color in person.

I guess the car will go straight to a PPF place before taking it home if thats the case.

Thank you

Don't forget that the tires have a break-in period also. This might improve afterwards.

True. Depends on conditions etc as well. I have continentals - will be replaced with Michelins when the time comes. Relative to the heavy M3 there is definitely less weight on those back tires though for grip…!

Late to the party but congratulations; I think you'll love the car. I really wanted to buy the 718 (loved the 681 but wanted new) but after driving a base and S 718, the 4cyl just didn't do anything for me so I went with the Z4 M40i.....The GTS4.0 is a very cool car but they weren't available then and I couldn't justify the price tag anyhow; it's almost DOUBLE the price of the M40i.

on the ZF, I love the tranny and I also had one in my Ftype R and have one in our Audi SQ8 - zero complaints and honestly, the PDK felt a little clunky to me at slow speeds.

Cheers,
Dave

Build looks good. Our cars are pretty similar. I have the moonlit top.

I would KEEP the wireless charging ...it's a feature you're better off having than not (IMO). Yes, your phone may get hot if you put it on the pad and close the door, but you can just take it off the charger if it gets hot. That's what I do in the rare occasion I use the feature.

Yeah, I will keep it, worse case I'm not using it. Still on the fence about red vs blue calipers. I agree the red would show more and give additional contrast, but blue is somehow different as I always had red on the last 4 cars.

I really like the wireless charging. I just drop my phone on there running Waze for speed camera alerts.

I understand that you want something different but in my opinion the blue calipers really get lost next to your color. I recommend that you compare side by side online pictures of actual cars shot in bright daylight (not the “build your own” BMW pictures) in your colors.

My build year only came with blue. Had red been available would have ordered them. Got red on the next car.

Red matches the tail lights, but don’t you have blue stitching on your interior? Hmmm 🤔 I would have a hard time deciding between the two colors

ha-ha, do not make me re-think my decision...red it is now lol

Also, I think most of the time it will be difficult to see the stitching and brakes simultaneously.

I had blue calipers on my gray 340i and agree with the others, it wasn't noticeable, there's not enough contrast. Red catches the eye and is sure to get some compliments. BMW uses a really bright red that pops.
