Acura TLX prototype
Acura's "prototype" designation means the all-new TLX is coming to a dealership near you this summer as a full-blown production car; engine, transmission and drivelines were all divulged at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit today. The TLX replaces the TL as Acura's midsize sedan and also bumps out the oddly sized TSX sedan.
More 2014 Detroit Auto Show Coverage Because it's a prototype, Acura can show the outside and leave the interior a mystery, which is the case with the 2015 TLX Prototype. The outside is the star, so far, though, with a familiar look cleaned up and toned down compared to a generation of beak-like styling that's now subdued and more rounded. Size-wise, Acura says the TLX's passenger space remains similar to the midsize proportions of the TL; it will continue to seat five occupants. The TLX will slot between the compact ILX and flagship RLX with a wheelbase of 109.3 inches, which is the same as the outgoing TL. The TLX has more taut dimensions with the svelte exterior size measuring 3.8 inches shorter in overall length compared to the TL. A shorter front and rear overhang add to the exterior's sportier appearance. Behind the shorter nose is a four- or six-cylinder engine - the TL only had a V-6 - and two new transmissions. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission pairs with a direct-injected 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, and a nine-speed automatic mates to the familiar 3.5-liter V-6, which is also direct injected. Acura promises class-leading fuel economy with features such as cylinder deactivation and the available all-wheel drive exclusively on V-6 models is 25 percent lighter than the outgoing system. Acura says both four- and six-cylinder TLXs will use Acura's next-generation all-wheel-steering system for improved handling and more precise steering control and high-speed stability; Acura's all-wheel-steering system debuted on the flagship RLX sedan. All-wheel steering and all-wheel drive will feature adjustability from four selectable driving modes: Econ, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus, as well as adjusting power-steering effort and throttle response. The TLX's performance credibility is said to improve with a more rigid body construction with a dual-purpose effort to reduce interior noise along with body sealing, sound insulation and an electronic noise control system. When the TLX goes on sale in summer 2014, it will also be available with a full suite of safety features, including collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with a low-speed follow feature and a blind spot warning system. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...auto-show.html |

It surprises me to say this, given that their current lineup is such a bore, but I really love the design of this car.

The grill integrates just fine with this car. The evolutionary changes to this car should make this a much more appealing to their target market. And assuming the DI will add the low-end punch that the last generation lacked, the engine should be a hoot. Well done Acura!

I don't really understand Acura.
Toyota is making great advances with power trains and drive trains, even design with Lexus. Nissan is doing their thing and evolving their Infiniti cars more or less. Honda...they keep coming out with the same stuff with the same fwd based models. I haven't found Acura interesting since the integra.

I think Acura should have kept the TSX, and kept that as their FWD people loader.
The TLX could have been a great RWD, sports sedan. That being said, this car visually is great.

To add to my rant.
I see some bmw in the front, infiniti from the side, lexus in the rear. The only thing I like are the mirrors, and that wont make it to production.

Acura is way behind of the game...they're not reliable, not sporty, not luxurious, mpg sucks and they're all ugly

Acura loves to focus on that symmetry line that runs down the length of the car... they'll always look less athletic to me because of that, and the beak still doesn't do them any favors. I'm even more lost on their brand identity than Infiniti's.

Surprisingly the overall look is decently designed. Its not ugly, nor vanilla, just decently penned down, at least the exterior.
At least Acura is starting to put out newer technology into their front wheel drive cars. 8 speed dual clutch with an automatic converter and the 9 speed ZF source auto in the TLX. The hybrid powertrain in the RLX. I wonder how much can you take and push the front wheel drive platforms to perform compared to a similar rear wheel drive car. Its just inherently imbalance towards the front. It is such a shame that the RLX hybrid powertrain is paired to such a vanilla exterior. I'm not going to argue Acura/Honda's stubbornness not to invest in a front rear wheel drive platform. Their Japanese counterparts have long invested in it, Lexus and Infiniti. The only thing that's is exciting is the NSX. Here's a good read into Acura. http://jalopnik.com/acura-is-slowly-...ide-1501315445 Last edited by cjwb1984; 01-16-2014 at 12:06 AM.. |

I actually like this a lot.
I can't wait to see the technology suite though. This will make it to my short list for next cars. I do wish 2 things from Acura though...maybe 3 things. 1. Yes, the grill needs to go (it is better than the last gen) 2. RWD set up. But i'll take AWD 3. 6mt option or a good DCT. They talked about the DCT being in the 2.4 litre drivetrain. Acura has always made crap Auto trans though so DCT scares me a little. Reliability has always been a strong suit along with resale, but they certainly do LAG development. They are still offering a similar 3.5L motor. I had that in my '08 TL-S. Overall, Imma look at it for purchase.

I'll be getting it (most likely). I think it looks really good, and for the 32-34k I don't see any better luxury-sports sedan alternatives.
This TLX and the M235i is my perfect garage combo right now. |

They are not done with the venetian plague beak yet? This car looks actually pretty good, except for this grotesque protrusion. It actually looks a lot like the Mazda 6 I must say.

The TLX is very visually appealing to me, more than anything they have put out since they originally started that massive grill change. Nothing has appealed to me (maybe the ILX a little bit), but nothing to make me actually consider buying. This is a game changer from that. I'm not sure if it is purchase worthy, I guess a test drive would leave that field open for now. |
