Continentals SC6 are decent, but after switching to Michelin PSS OEM Star there is no comparison. Much stickier, more communication, better turn in. You can even see the mixtures of tread materials used by looking at the tires. If you don’t drive the car hard you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference. But I can heartily recommend these tires when you do need a new set.

Previously I had a Supra which came with the same Michelin PSS tires that I believe used to be on the Z4 until recently. It's obviously hard to compare tires on two different cars but so far my very subjective opinion is that I much prefer the Contis on my new Z4 to the PSS in terms of noise, ride quality, and handling confidence. (The PSS receives a lot of hate among Supra owners for a multitude of reasons!)

However, I was actually dreading these Conti tires because they also came with my Polestar 2 and the ride quality was way too harsh for me. Not on the Z4 -- they really feel well matched so far. Is it the suspension design? The much greater weight of the Polestar? Not really sure. When I replaced the SportContact 6 with Conti DWS 06+ all season tires the Polestar's ride improved dramatically but my EV range went down a bit. So I'm hoping the SportContact 6 will contribute to better gas mileage as well.

Surprised to hear that. You said you may have had PSS on before. Can you confirm? Were they Star?

I couldn’t disagree more. The PSS are super quiet, will likely have longer tread life, handle far better, etc.

And it’s a lottery from factory to get the Michelins. They still offer them, although it’s probably the PS4S?

You can't order the 4s tires on the Z4 from the factory. It is only the PSS or the Continentals and it is the luck of the draw.

I’ve been so unlucky. M3: pirellis. Z4: conti’s. Hopefully third time’s a charm.

Just to rub in some salt 2004 till 2022 have only gotten Michelin Summer tires. Got 4's for the Z4 on replacement of originals at about 19,000 miles.

Never got squat on the real lottery.

Can't confirm the Supra versions were the star variety. If you to go Tire Rack the BMW star version of the PSS is supposedly the "OE" tire for the 2021 3.0 Supra and the only variety of PSS you can buy from them at this point.

I never replaced the tires on the Supra so I can't comment on whether the PS4S (which was much preferred by other Supra owners) would have been an improvement. I've had the PS4S on other cars and they were enjoyable.

I completely trust your experience with the PSS and when time comes to replace my tires I will have to give them another chance!

I wouldn't buy the PSS or SportContact6 in 2023 when the PS4S or ECS2 exist.

Well, I don’t drive in the wet and the PSS is a superior dry performance tire in my opinion. I’ll never buy SC6 again - it’s Michelin for me.

I used the Tire Rack driving test & readers feedback to make a choice.

Both the TR driver test & readers feed back were wash & said the same thing. Dry 9.5 Wet 8.9. The 4 outscored the SS on recommended 9.1 to 8.8. Both tires are BMW* & priced pretty much the same.

Difference seems to be that the SS is still the OEM tire.

To me after driving on both its 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other. Did not seem to be any tradeoff on wet/dry performance between the tires. The only car I have that is weather sensitive is the Cobra with no roof & road course tires.

On the Continental's did not see any with the BMW*. Car was on lease & was not sure I was going to keep it when the original tires were used up.

Dealer will ding you for tires if they are not BMW* on turn-in. Even if you get SS or 4S without the BMW* you will get dinged for tires.

So be careful which ones you buy. Non BMW* tires are cheaper & there is an actual difference in the rubber used VS the BMW* tires.

In the last 2 years I have replaced 4 tires (caused by nails) with my tire & wheel plan. Because the car came with the 19" PSS BMW Star tires my dealer always replaced them with the exact same PSS BMW Star version. I also had the PSS on my old Mercedes CLK500 for years and loved driving with them and it is no different today with my M40i as in my opinion they are the perfect tire for south Florida.

I realize that Tire Rack's ratings are subjective but they give both tires a 9 rating for wet and dry traction. They also state "Michelin's Pilot Super Sport has been at the top of the Max Performance Summer category since its debut in 2011. It's the benchmark by which all other tires in the category are judged."

If I had to replace 4 tires and didn't have this tire & wheel plan I would definitely buy the PS4s as they are virtually the same price as the PSS on Tire Rack. I would love to give them a try as they are a better tire and there is no downside to putting them on an M40i.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! I agree, if on a lease always turn in the car with the same tires that were on it when you took possession.
