car stalling at red light / stop sign

Just returned from a about 900 mile road trip mid-week. Drove around town yesterday doing errands. Engine was warm. Comfort mode. No check engine light.

Waiting at red light, car stalled. I didn't even notice at first because I thought auto start/stop was active, but when I pressed the gas pedal, nothing happened. Looked down and there was a message in the display that the transmission was in neutral. I am reasonably sure it was in Drive. Shifted to Park, then Drive, but nothing. No check engine light.

By that time, cars behind me started honking, so between anxiety, panic and anger, I think I shifted back to park, pressed start/stop, and engine restarted.

Entered Costco parking lot. Car was standing there for maybe 45 minutes. Engine still warm when I got back. Drove to Costco gas station (same parking lot). After filling up, had to stop at a stop sign in the parking lot - and the car stalled again. It was almost like the car went through its 'end of trip' shut down motion, even the steering wheel lock was engaged. Had to open the door, close it, and start the car up. Same issue - car was stuck in Drive this time for sure.

I have a service appointment for Monday, but wondering if anyone else experienced this?

Turns out it’s the starter. Part comes from Europe so I will be driving the loaner for the next 7 to 10 days.

Glad you found out what the problem was. I was thinking the ignition switch might be starting to fail. Thanks for posting so we all know more about what can happen.

Thanks for the update. Makes me happy I used Bimmercode to disable the auto start feature

Thanks for sharing. Seems weird that the steering lock should engage. Hopefully it gets fixed first time.

Thanks... I may have had the door open or pressed start/stop already and that caused the steering lock to engage. Can't remember now.

Yeah, just a couple days earlier I got stuck in a traffic jam (accident) on the interstate. I didn't disable the auto start stop and do have to wonder if the frequent starting/stopping had something to do with it.

It’s unlikely considering that’s what it’s designed to do...
Blame ghosts in the system
