I really hope you're joking. The current Tesla factory is the old California Toyota/GM factory. He purchased it and is using it to manufacture Teslas.

Elon Musk doesn't want Tesla to be around for too long. He has stated that his intention is to get major automakers to build more electric vehicles (using their larger economy of scale) to put Tesla out of business. Tesla is here to create the dream and build excitement... and it's working because even I want one those homely-looking cars! Musk has already used profits and new investments into improving batteries for electric vehicles and intends to move into that market.

So far he has expanded production of the Model 3 by extending manufacturing into the factory's car park.

He probably should not have taken it public, then. He has a duty to Teslas shareholders. That may require him to sell the auto business in order to execute a new strategy, but he needs to disclose that intent - otherwise he is misleading investors.

It's more of an expectation than the intention to succumb to the well-established automakers. So it's neither part of the mission statement nor a planned strategy. It's just inevitable. Musk is no longer on the board so he has no duties (he-he). And it would be a dumb board if they think they're going to go 50 years against Ford, GM, and Toyota.

Remember: with buying shares comes the expectation of risk. It's like a Surgeon General warning. LOL

musk intends for tesla to succeed. just because he gave up job titles doesnt mean he isn't in charge. the suggestion that he is okay with tesla failing and other automakers taking over electric car manufacturing is absurd. musk owns a majority stake in tesla and has options to own significantly more if he meets certain market-cap benchmarks. some of the posts here are from la-la-land.

I was reading an article the other day about the new Porsche Mission E. Pre-orders seem to be outstripping availability and it was reported that most of those ordering are Tesla owners, I suspect trading the iPad for a real car.

I think all the EV's have that video game yuk factor to their interiors. Gone are the days of a proper mechanical tachometer and the visceral experience of driving a vintage sports car. It's all touch screens and automation.

Not my cup of tea really.

I think the clusters on a base model 3 series are boring and unattractive and don't take advantage of the possibilities. The current 5 series does a much better job. We've also seen some nice digital clusters on HyperCars that are quite nice. So really, just like the analog cluster, how nice the digital clusters are depends on the execution.

And don't forget, all those analog gauge sets these days are all just digitally driven stepper motors anyway. The days of a true analog dash are long gone.

A digital display can be done nicely but I'm with Grumpy Old Man on this one. Nothing beats the look of dials, IMO.

I love the look of dials. I had a loaner 3 series and it was kind of miserable using the digital dash. Being back in my M3 it was like heaven looking at textured dials and real needles. It was like looking at a piece of art rather than a crude computer readout. That being said, here are some that look decent:

Audi R8

720S

^^^^ Im not against technology, but Im left wondering how many drivers would understand even a fraction of the information on that display. I mean, were not shooting an ILS approach to minimums in an airliner.

They all make sense to me. Starting from 1:00 going clockwise:

CEL
Right Indicator
Coolant Temp
Fuel Pressure
Fuel Level
Brake Horse Power
Oil Pressure
Oil Temp
Left Indicator
Battery

The center is the tack with the speedometer in the interior gauge. Digital speed, gear, shift indicator, mileage and turbo boost gauge.

It's not like these are entirely new to digital gauges. These have been in sports cars and GTs for awhile now:

I'll be interested to see - I don't think it's a forgone conclusion...

Elon has expressed publicly a deep mistrust of governments - he's talked on a number of (public) occasions about the US Government being his greatest competitor with SpaceX and the importance of trade secrets (rather than patents) protecting the value of his Intellectual Property.

... but he may under-estimate the level of 'leaking' that goes on in Chinese business.
