US Handling of Coronavirus

So we've established the Chinese botched their handling of the virus. We've had a 2-month heads up. Virus reported 2 months ago. 1 month ago WHO declared an International public health emergency. The next day HHS declared a public health emergency for the US. So here we go, the ball is rolling. Will we/can we do better than China?

Let's use this thread to track the USA's response to the shitstorm that's about to hit our shores. Not a matter of if but when at this point.

Yesterday VP Pence was put in charge of handling this situation for us. Good call? Bad call?

Finally, very interested to hear the thoughts of the "limited government" camp. Is this a situation that the US government should be involved with preparing and reacting to or should that be left to the private sector and the states?

Pence has been governor so will understand how to mobilize state resources/responses. Good on that point. Don’t know about his other attributes in this context.

I prefer small federal role (CDC tracking and info, research funding, borders and screening at entry points, etc) and a more significant state and local role (quarantines, hospitals/treatment, etc). Some states will need more federal help than others and that is fine. Too much centralization means mistakes are on a larger scale; too little means insufficient information and resources. I’ll muddle through the middle ground.

I think things are going to turn out great.

I feel this way because of examples such as New Orleans and Katrina, the Federal response to that catastrophe was top notch.

As well, more recently look how the Diamond Princess quarantine was handled. Again, top notch.

Finally, we now have the Stable Genius in charge.

Rest easy my fellow Americans.

Canada has the response all other countries should follow. Below are the points we've followed my city.
1.) Vancouver being one of if not the main point of entry into Canada for people from china with ZERO travel restrictions or even confirmed if people coming in originated from Wuhen. Check.

2.) People with confirmed cases were sent home and ASKED NICELY to self quarantine. Check.

We may be sick and some will even die but no one can say anyone was offended or we weren't polite.

On this topic id take a stable genius or Pence in charge any day of the week.

Going to enjoy watching the smear by the media
Trump announce a travel ban on Chinese entering the usa on 1/31 which was the right call unfortunately too late due to China cover up.

The media proceeded to bitch and cry how trump was harming travel students and a ton of other crap over something no worse then the flu.

Then Italy happen and the markets imploded base on the markets being inflated by China and the central banks dumping money into the system and misinformation by the media.

Now they are crying how trump didn't do enough. Truly amusing to watch how the media operates.

^^banning Chinese citizens was largely for show, as people were still free to travel to and from China and the USA. Really not effective other than a pander to emotion.

Also not banning people from other countries where infections are happening either. Seems odd if one feels it is a prudent policy to not continue banning people from other countries as hotspots pop up.

Regardless it was too late (as many others have said as well) even if their truly was a Chinese cover up as some are charging.

For an illness that is know to be infectious still while the person is showing no symptoms. What good is that?

it does matter if your going to make such a statement

it the same historic revisionism spew when people say the Europeans purposely expose the natives to disease when germ theory wasn't even known until late 1800

Stable genius today:

"It's going to disappear. One day it's like a miracle, it will disappear from our shores, you know, it could get worse before it gets better. Could maybe go away. We'll see what happens. Nobody really knows."

So much comedy. This is the POTUS speaking his own words. So telling of the man's intellect. Maybe he's a genius. Maybe he's idiot. We'll have to see. Nobody really knows. Or maybe they do know. Probably not though.

I seriously believe Trump is looking at a way to dump Pence by giving him the response oversight lead. That's the conspiracy theory I'll be pushing.

I just read an article that NIH has already started clinical trials on a treatment called "Remdesivir" and I guess its already showed promising signs.

According to the article, its the fastest that clinical trials have been implemented and tested but still another 12-18 months out for a full vaccine. Pretty interesting read.

Coronavirus mortality rate is no higher than the Flu. Millions of people do not get their flu shot annually for a bunch of reasons varying from pure laziness to conspiracy theories.

SARS in comparison had an 8% mortality rate.

This shit is overblown by the media and the markets are taking a beating as a result.

I say this as a medical professional.

How dare you pull the doctor card and get all doctory on us by bringing facts into this conversation!

yeah, i've been watching pretty closely as the number of infections and number of deaths have been reported. Seems to be about a 3% mortality rate. Still, unlike SARS, COVID-19 seems to be significantly more transmissible. The RO is super high, and based on Chinese data that we all agree is likely downplayed. Mortality rate may be lower than the flu but if 75% of the US gets it that's still nearly 10 million dead. Now that 3% is mostly coming out of China where health care is maybe not the best. So even if we see a 1% mortality rate here, if a significant portion of the country gets this, the death toll will be massive.
